Priest Holmes
The 3-time Pro Bowl RB is promising a comeback. Will it affect Larry Johnson? Story. Johnson's holdout is affecting Johnson. But Holmes in the background is just enough to make most people take Stephen Jackson #2 in fantasy drafts.

July 25
NFL 2007 Preseason
The full 4-week preseason schedule is here. The first preseason game is the Hall of Fame Game Sunday August 5th (Saints vs Steelers in Canton, Ohio). Weeks 1, 2, and 3 will have games Thursday through Monday beginning Week 1 (August 9-13). Week 4 closes out with a Thursday night slate on August 30 and a couple games Friday August 31. Michael Vick
What's all the fuss about? We fall in the camp of confused football fans. Breaking the law is breaking the law, no excuses. And NFL players aren't above the law. On the other hand, Vick is a great talent and a good football player. And for fans of football, don't you just wish whatever happens off the field is separate from on the field. It may sound a little, well not politically correct, but what's all the fuss. Can't we just talk about Vick's NFL game. Can't we get Pacman on the field? Can't we keep Vick on the field?

Competition for the NFL
It's not an original idea. A full-fledged start-up professional league, the United States Football League (USFL) played 3 seasons between 1983 and 1985 (not to mention the XFL, remember?). The USFL used star-RB Herschel Walker to raise its profile. The USFL quickly fell apart but it did have a big impact on the NFL as the NFL eventually embraced the 2-point conversion and TV replays (two ideas from the USFL). Also, the competition caused the NFL to raise salaries. Story. So, now, new competition is in the making. The United Football League (UFL) could begin play as early as August 2008. There is one major difference between the USFL and UFL. The USFL played during the NFL's offseason. The UFL plans to play on Friday nights, up against high school football, during the NFL season. Story. Controversial, out-spoken Mark Cuban, owner of the NBA's Dallas Mavericks, is behind the new UFL league, here. Cuban would likely set-up a team in Las Vegas-- one of a handful of major cities that don't have professional football, like San Antonio, Los Angeles, and... Mexico City. The new league also plans to issue IPO's that would give fans ownership stakes in franchises. The UFL would get off the ground, not necessarily with a major TV contract, but just a minor one with a smaller network such as USA, TNT, or Versus. So far, the only 'competition' to be successful has been indoor football. The Arena Football League (since 1987), and now, the United Indoor Football (UIF) League and AF2, have been doing well.

Why not JaMarcus Russell? That's our question. We are 4 weeks away from draft day: April 28 and 29. Full coverage at the NFL.com official draft site here. And you can blast off from our NFL Draft page.

March 5
Lance Briggs and the Bears
Briggs has just about totally lost perspective. This rant is borderline Latrell Sprewell. Yo, dude: you signed a contract and your making like $7 million dollars a year. Now, is ownership off in the woods a little bit? They might be. Maybe Briggs deserves the dough. But the bigger question for ownership is- why did they deal their biggest workhorse-- Thomas Jones (story).

Michael Vick
In these times of heavy security at the airport, Michael Vick is reportedly using secret compartments hidden in modified water bottles. Story and smack. Vick is just about 2 years into his 10-year, $130 million contract (story).

January 15
2007 NFL Draft
It's time to start talking about the draft. ESPN's Top 32 here. JaMarcus Russell is moving up fast. But 7th still doesn't seem high enough. This is more like it. A 6-6, 260 lbs QB with 3,000 yards passing and 67.8 completion percentage (stats here). It's gotta be either Detroit or Oakland. This smile says it all-- JaMarcus has an idea where he's going.

Patriots-Chargers
Tomlinson and Co. have every reason to wonder about the Patriots reaction (story here). It was a huge, huge win, but as the Chargers point out, most of the Patriots have been there, done that. So why the in-your-face celebration? Too bad, 'cause it overshadowed a big time win summed up in one-word: Quarterbacks. We think Philip Rivers has a solid pro career ahead of him. And if nothing else, he has proven he can play this year. But in the clutch, Tom Brady proved his experience. It was telling watching Rivers on 3rd and 4 near the end of the game. He was shaking off his man in motion in a 'man-i'm-trying-to-concentrate-nobody-move' kind of way. And then the play call was one look only. He was in over his head. Meanwhile, Tom Brady calmly leading his crew to two 4th quarter scores, including a 72-yard, 2:16 drive that led to the game-winning field goal (play-by-play here). And, throughout the game, Brady was eying the defense and making adjustments.

New NFL Stadiums
The new generation of NFL Stadiums continues. The design for the new Dallas Cowboys Stadium has been unveiled (photo here), and the stadium will open in 2009. Cowboys Owner Jerry Jones is already angling for the 2011 Super Bowl. They've got an official website up here (stadium.dallascowboys.com). It's based on the same look of the current stadium, but its definitely next generation. Houston's Reliant Stadium (here) and Seattle's Qwest Field (here). There are several others in the works (like Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis here. Visit "Stadiums of the NFL" here.

Week 15 Picks
Our NFL Week 15 Picks have been posted. Here are the Vegas odds. And here is TradeSports prices. Analysis: The computer likes Atlanta, while Vegas is favoring Dallas. And Vegas likes Pittsburgh, while the computer sides with Carolina (barely). And the computer isn't jumping all over New Orleans like Vegas is..

NFL Power Rankings
Visit NFL Power Ranking for update through week 15. Top 3 behind San Diego, Baltimore, and New England.

December 12
Jacksonville Jaguars
Maurice Jones-Drew (game log here) is fast-gaining respect by scoring in 5 straight games and racking up 166 yards rushing last week against the Colts. But its not so much Jones-Drew as it is the entire Jaguars running game. The Jaguars had 375 rushing yards and 4 TD's vs Indy (box score here).

December 6
Week 14 Picks
Our NFL Week 14 Picks have been posted. Here are the Vegas odds. And here is TradeSports prices. Analysis: The computer likes Minnesota. Vegas is taking Detroit. Computer likes Washington while Vegas takes the Eagles.

November 29
Jim Brown
Nice interview with the Hall of Famer here. About the NFL, it's not surprising that he would say "They're trying to turn it into touch football". He Was known as a tough player that fought for every yard. But we disagree with him about the rules to protect the QB. What's so hard about taking out the smallest guy on the field after the play is over? That type of cheap shot should be penalized. Try flattening the offensive lineman standing in your way.

November 28
Week 13 Picks
Our NFL Week 13 Picks have been posted. Here are the Vegas odds. And here is TradeSports prices. Analysis: Thursday night football sure makes life difficult for setting your office picks and fantasy line-ups. The computer likes the Giants at home vs Dallas. And maybe the Cardinals give the Rams a tougher game then Vegas expects. Monday Night Football should be close.

NFL Power Rankings
Visit NFL Power Ranking for update through week 12. Baltimore sneaks into the Top 3 behind San Diego and New England.

Monday Night Football
Snow in Green Bay in November? That's totally expected. Monday Night Football in Seattle in November... and snow? Could only happen if the Packers are playing.

November 14
Chicago Bears
The Bears showed the heart of a champion on Sunday Night Football. The Giants were 2 minutes away from halftime. They had total control of the game. But good teams make the most of the final minutes of play. Another Chicago team, the Jordan-era Bulls, were famous for closing strong. In the final minute and a half of a quarter, the Bulls could evaporate a 5 or 7 point lead. The Bears closed strong to finish the first half-- scoring their first TD with 35 seconds to go (box score here). And dominated from then on.

November 7
Week 10 Picks
Our NFL Week 10 Picks have been posted. Here are the Vegas odds. And here is TradeSports prices. Analysis: Miami and KC is a toss-up. Computer gives the edge to the Dolphins. Vegas is going with the Chiefs. Versus the computer, Vegas is bigger on the Eagles, Baltimore, and Dallas.

NFL Power Rankings
Visit NFL Power Ranking for update through week 9. Top 3: San Diego, New England, and Denver.

November 6
Chicago Bears
Now the 2006 Bears do officially have 1 thing in common with the '85 Bears. Their first loss was to the Dolphins (it turned out to be their only loss in 1985). Hindsight is always 20-20, but its worth pointing out that the Dolphins had more than the usual stake at work in yesterday's game. They had to protect the legacy of their franchise-- the undefeated 1972 Miami Dolphins (17-0 including their Super Bowl win) (standings here). The only undefeated team in NFL history.

Visit NFL Power Ranking for update through week 7.

Week 7 Picks
Our NFL Week 7 Picks have been posted. Here are the Vegas odds. And here is TradeSports prices. Analysis: Vegas likes several road teams-- but beware. It's shake-up Sunday. The computer has 4 out of 13 games that are decided by less than 1/2 a point. The best chance is Indy, but they are coming off a bye week against a team facing a near must win game-- the Redskins.

NFL Coaches
Best NFL coach tirades ever? Video. Dennis Green's passionate "We let 'em off the hook" was actually kind of inspiring. And this is worth a laugh.

Fantasy Football
Brandon Jacobs stock has moved up just by Tiki Barber's mention of retirement after this season (story, more). If so (or even if maybe), the Giants are going to be stepping up the pace of the transition to Jacobs (game log here). He could be a touchdown factory in the 2nd half of the season.

October 11
NFL Power Rankings
Visit NFL Power Ranking for update through week 5.

Week 6 Picks
Our NFL Week 6 Picks have been posted. Here are the Vegas odds. And here is TradeSports prices. Analysis: The computer actually likes Tampa Bay, even though the Bengals are a 5 to 6 point favorite. Several other differences: computer leans Miami, New Orleans, and Detroit-- against Vegas. Computer is softer on the Bears.. and, speculatively, we suspect that could be an upset possibility..

October 10
Chicago Bears
The fact that the Bears are leading the league in least points allowed surprises no one. However, the shocker is that they have the NFL's highest scoring offense after 5 games (stats here). Next up: The Cardinals in Arizona at the new stadium. An odd imbalance sets itself up. The Bears are a slightly better than expected 5-0. The Cardinals are a much worse than expected 1-4. Monday Night Football is a must watch.

October 4
NFL Power Rankings
We have begun posting our weekly NFL Power Ranking. Computer-model generated.

Week 5 Picks
Our NFL Week 5 Picks have been posted. Here are the Vegas odds. And here is TradeSports prices. Analysis: The computer is lighter on New Orleans and New England than Vegas is. Computer is big on Denver and picks Green Bay over St. Louis.

September 21
Week 3 Picks
Our NFL Week 3 Picks have been posted. Here are the Vegas odds. And here is TradeSports prices. Analysis: Vegas says Carolina gets 1st win, computer says Bucs. Computer confident in the Steelers. Likes Browns over the Ravens; and takes the 49ers over the Eagles. Is Vegas too big on the Patriots?

Louisiana Superdome
Then... and now.

September 20
New Orleans
Monday Night Football this week in the Louisiana Superdome vs. Michael Vick and the Atlanta Falcons (story, more, game). The game is sold out (story). The entire season at the Superdome is sold out (story). Match-up game review for the game between two 2-0 teams here.

September 16
Week 2
Our NFL Picks for week 2 have been posted. Here are the Vegas odds. And here is TradeSports prices.

Reggie Bush
The same journalists that write about how college athletes deserve to get paid, are the same journalists trying to make a controversy out of Bush making a buck in school. Yahoo! Sports has established a whole portal-entry page for all its Reggie Bush coverage, here. Sad actually.

September 7
Week 1
The 2006 NFL Season kicks off tonight in Pittsburgh. Our NFL Picks for week 1 are now posted. Here are the Vegas odds. And here is TradeSports prices.

August 28
Wide Receivers
Start at Yahoo! Sports expert polls here. Donte' Stallworth (career) stock up (story). And it's good news for Donovan McNabb who now has 2 solid targets, including Reggie Brown (Fabiano analysis here).

August 22
Fantasy Football Drafts
AntSports has a nice average draft position calculator here. It's worth checking out-- it includes a standard deviation. Among the most volatile are Carson Palmer, T.O., Domanick Davis, Reggie Bush, and Brian Westbrook. And another ADP here. And one of the best (includes high-low) here. Remember that rule #1 of your fantasy draft is to know your own leagues settings-- each point system is different and if the points are skewed to QB's then you need to draft accordingly, etc. If your league has 2 RB's or 1 RB starting that's a big difference also.

Fantasy Football Draft
NEW: We have posted our Top 50 players in a color-coded mock fantasy football draft format.

August 18
Steven Jackson
He's up at #5 overall at Fox Sports Fantasy Guide here. His TD totals should improve (career stats here). But will he get the ball 300 times or improve his 4.1 yards per carry? Rudi Johnson is a better bet. Take a look at the 2005 running back statistical rankings here.

August 17
Fantasy NFL Draft
SportsLine Senior Fantasy Writer, Dave Richard, ranks the Top 200 players here. Larry Johnson 1st (no surprise). But Ronnie Brown (news) is 12th. And AP's John McFarland has him 10th here. Most other fantasy drafts have Brown around 6-8 and think he's "ready to take next step". We rank Brown 8th in our Running Back Rankings.

DeShaun Foster
Carolina Panthers QB, Jake Delhomme says "I think DeShaun can have a big, big year"-- 1,200 to 1,500 yards because the offensive line has "a little more meat" this year (story). Foster's career stats here.

August 16
T.O.
Like clockwork? With one half of the month of August in the books, Terrell Owens takes the field at practice today, August 16th (story).

August 15
Fantasy Draft
A "one-man mock draft" by Yahoo's Brandon Funston here: RB's are the first 11 picks. And some additional position-by-position rankings here. Also, Fanbay.net fantasy running back rankings and fantasy quarterback rankings.

August 12
Arizona Cardinals: New Stadium
The biggest, baddest stadium is opening: main link, construction photos, photos. Fabric roof with retractable panels.. and a moving field- cause it means less humidity in the stadium since the grass can be watered outside and moved in just for the game (quick facts).

August 8
Fantasy Draft: Who to pick 6th?
Here's a quick rundown of 4 overall rankings below. As everyone knows, the Top 3 are the same everywhere. In fact, really the top 5 are the same (because its either Tiki Barber or Clinton Portis at 4 and 5). The fun begins with the unlucky 6th position in the draft. At that point, its wide open. Most fantasy fans seem to feel Edgerrin James is the safest pick at 6. The rankings here don't mind rolling the dice and presuming a big year from either: LaMont Jordan, Ronnie Brown, or Steven Jackson. And this raises the Wide Receiver question. What's safer-- picking a wideout like, say, Steve Smith; or trying to sort out who you think is best among all the running backs. The better pick in your draft will be 8 or 9; or at the turn when you get two picks, because this way either one of these RB's falls in your lap and you don't have to worry whether you picked the right one; or you grab two.

· FF Toolbox (here): L.Johnson, Tomlinson, Alexander, Tiki, Portis, L.Jordan
· Funston (here): Alexander, L.Johnson, Tomlinson, Portis, Tiki, R.Brown
· Fox Fantasy Guide (here): Alexander, L.Johnson, Tomlinson, Tiki, Portis, S. Jackson
· Ask The Commish (here): L.Johnson, Alexander, Tomlinson, Portis, Barber, L.Jordan

NFL: 2006 Season
A little something new to preview the season: "NFL Top 10 Things to Digest". Our division-by-division picks will be coming soon.

August 6
First Game
The Hall of Fame game kicks off the NFL Preseason tonight: Oakland vs Philadelphia (details here). Most interesting: it marks the beginning of Sunday Night Football on NBC. Official site, SNFonNBC.com, here. This includes the NFL's "Flexible Schedule" (ensuring the best match-ups, with 12-day notice) beginning in week 10 (except week 16 here).

July 30
Priest Holmes
Retiring? Story.

Steve Smith
All the latest here. Smith is usually reliably healthy (career stats here). He's had a hamstring injury in training camp before (2003) and been fine. The one main exception is 2004-- when Smith played just one game because of a broken left fibula (career history here). More news on Smith via Yahoo! here.

July 29
2006 NFL Training Camp
Training camps are open. Full schedule and locations here (and if you want to go or need more details check this link here). Full coverage at NFL.com here and at ESPN.com here.

And fantasy player rankings and comments are available for quarterbacks and running backs.

July 12
Running Backs
Our first rankings for the fantasy season are now posted: Fantasy Football Running Back Ranking.

July 5
Running Backs
For now, its just time to take a look at the top 3. Alexander, Johnson, or Tomlinson. In our opinion, the safest, surest pick is Shaun Alexander. Funston has Alexander on top here; and, Alexander tops Yahoo's composite ranking here. But there is general agreement across the board, that Larry Johnson should be your first pick. And his stats at the end of the year are hard to ignore. Fantasy Football Jungle (here), FF Today (here) and FF Toolbox (here) all say Larry Johnson.

July 3
Wide Receivers
Yahoo! rankings are posted here, using a consensus format with 4 voters including Brandon Funston. Steve Smith tops the list and T.O., Chad Johnson, and Torry Holt tie for 2nd. Larry Fitzgerald climbs into the mix at FFToday wide receiver rankings here. And FF Toolbox likes Fitzgerald also (WR rankings). At Fox Sports here, Michael Harmon lists T.O. at the top.

June 7
Baltimore Ravens
There is no doubt the Ravens needed a new QB. And, there is no doubt just about anyone would be better than another year of hoping Kyle Boller would pull it together. But Steve McNair? Don't put on the championship horns quite yet as ESPN's John Clayton (here) puts them instantly in a class with the Steelers and Bengals. Maybe. But, McNair's move to Baltimore says more about Vince Young's potential in Tennessee than anything else.

June 3
2006 NFL Bye Weeks
Don't forget the bye week schedule has been condensed so it ends in week 9 instead of week 10. That means 6 teams are off in week 6 and week 7. So, the fantasy implications are a little more noticeable and some planning ahead could make the difference for you. 2006 bye week NFL schedule.

May 29
Ricky Williams
Yes, one guy can put a whole league on the map. A brilliant move by the Toronto Argonauts to sign the much-troubled Ricky Williams (story). And, a big boost for the Canadian Football League (CFL here). Ricky Williams brings headlines and attention to football north of the border. The Argonauts (official site) first regular season game is June 17th.

April 23
2006 NFL Draft
Mock draft with solid analysis via Scott Wright here-- sees Leinart going 7th to Oakland. Makes sense.

Reggie Bush
With just a week to go before the NFL draft, we are not sure what the point is of Yahoo Sports trying to break an "exclusive" story (here) about Reggie Bush's family living in a nice house. However, the consequences are very high, for USC, since the story has the potential to lead to forfeiting games.

April 6
2006 NFL Season
The 2006 NFL Schedule has been released today here. Dolphins at Pittsburgh kicks it off Thursday September 7th. And a double dose of Monday Night Football: Vikings at Washington at 7pm ET and Chargers at Oakland at 10:15.

For serious Cowboy fans, we would think they must be wondering if there is anything sacred left in football. We basically don't hold some grudge of hatred or dislike for T.O. (he can play). The rub for Cowboys fans that really does make T.O. different is the taunt on the star at Texas Stadium (story). Can serious Dallas fans ever really cheer for T.O. (story)?

February 1
Super Bowl XL
Our prediction and some extra stats and charts are here: Super Bowl pick. Is overtime a possibility? Both the Steelers and the Seahawks have already played two overtime games each this season. Pittsburgh was 0-2. Seattle was 1-1. We think the games going to be very close. Vegas, on the other hand, continues to inch Pittsburgh's odds higher-- they are now 4, 4 1/2 point favorites. Our computer generated pick has the Steelers favored by just half a point. You can also check out TradeSports Super Bowl plays here.

The Hype About Joey
Is this the same-old drama replayed every year? First, some quote emerges from a player on one team saying 'we're gonna win'. Then, some player on the other team goes off. This year, the Seahawks TE Jerramy Stevens has Steelers LB Joey Porter flipping (story). In this case, the more drama the better. We're talking about the Steelers. We're talking about Bettis. It's the Super Bowl. It's in Detroit. It should be contentious and messy.

Time for a T.O.
Would the Super Bowl really be the Super Bowl if Terrell Owens didn't finish this season right where he started and finished it off-- at the top of the hour on SportsCenter? Well, he's got press. There's the T.O. to Denver rumors. And now, Donovan McNabb is finally talking T.O. smack here. McNabb said the whole Owens saga literally divided the Eagles locker room to the point where you had "guys not trusting the guy next to them."

The Word Out on Super Bowl XL
What does Detroit itself have to say about the 40th Super Bowl coming to their city? The story here. One area resident says "Detroit is an embarrassment" and another "can't wait until the Super Bowl mess is over." As for the tourists, one from Dublin Ireland doesn't understand all the fuss.. "we lived it up in downtown Detroit." Super Bowl XL is Sunday, game coverage starting at 6 pm ET from Ford Field.

NFL Playoff Picks
The wild card picks are up for the 2006 NFL Playoffs. We will be posting picks throughout the playoffs. And we will havea detailed analysis for the Super Bowl. For now, here is the NFL Playoffs Picks page.

Final NFL Power Rankings
Happy New Year. We have posted our final NFL power rankings. The San Diego Chargers (despite missing the playoffs and losing their last 2 games) ended the season as the #1 team in the NFL. A quick insight into this is the Chargers schedule (here). Besides 2 games each versus the Broncos and the Chiefs, San Diego also played: Dallas, NY Giants, at New England, Pittsburgh, at Philadelphia (before they fell apart-- actually, McNabb and T.O. connected in the 1st half of that game), Buffalo, at Washington, at Indianapolis. It was easily the toughest schedule in the NFL.

December 12
Indianapolis Colts
To play or not to play. Story. They lost every single pre-season game. Really. All five of the Colts games were big L's-- especially the last week, losing 38-0 at Cincinnati. Now, 3 games stand between them and an undeated season (schedule and results here). Only one team (back in the days of the 14 game regular season) has done it before-- the 1972 Miami Dolphins (their results here). The Colts should go for it. Don't be stupid with the starters-- rest them as much as possible-- but go for the W-- straight up, every game. It shouldn't even be a question.

Philadelphia Eagles
Our read on the Eagles is that their 4-3 start is basically just a bump in the road. We think Philadelphia is still one of the best teams in the NFL.

New Orleans Saints
We will agree that this looks more and more like a real possibility. But we totally disagree with Magee's reasoning and opinions about New Orleans. The city, and the region (just think SEC and LSU), know football. And, the Sugar Bowl linked top NCAA football and championships with the city of New Orleans. There is no reason not to keep the NFL in New Orleans. It is L.A. which has spit out NFL teams. But, Saints owner Tom Benson is clearly indicating an intent to move (here is a letter written to Benson.. "not now. Not anymore.".

August 29
AFC vs NFC
The disparity is wide this year. It's all AFC. That doesn't mean the Eagles can't be competitive come Super Bowl time, but the battle for the AFC will once again be where the action really is.

August 28
Fantasy Football Draft
Latest NFL player rankings for top quarterback's and best running backs.

RB's to watch
These guys are making names for themselves in the preseason, though not all of them will be getting playing time. In most cases, they are just names to keep an eye on. Although Parker could start (latest) for PIT if Bettis isn't healthy. And, Johnson could play if Holmes is hurt. Chester Taylor (BAL), Larry Johnson (KC), William Green (CLE), Willie Parker (PIT), and Vernand Morency (HOU). Also, Maurice Hicks has played well for the 49ers. Derrick Ward has been respectable for the Giants. Adimchinobe Echemandu made the most of on opportunity in Minnesota but is not likely to be heard from for the time being.

Mike Anderson
There are very few doubters after last night's big game versus the Colts (159 yards on just 13 carries; 2 touchdowns).

"Cadillac" Williams
Tampa Bay RB Carnell Williams (rookie, Auburn) "looked sharp" in yesterday's loss to the Dolphins. He got just 5 carries but ran for 28 yards averaging 5.6 per carry. Earnest Graham picked up a TD for the Bucs to likely earn a spot on the roster.

August 27
RB in Cleveland
Lee Suggs is currently #1 on the depth charts according to Romeo Crennel and that doesn't look like it will change. However, Suggs is out possibly for the first 2 games of the regular season. Reuben Droughns is the obvious replacement, but he is being outplayed by William Green. For those in deep leagues desperate for an RB, this is one spot to keep an eye on.

Willie Parker
Parker is emerging as one of the key pick-up possibilities for the start of the season. The Steelers promise to hold their own this season and while Roethlisberger gets, and deserves, attention for Pittsburgh's success, it is the running game which really makes things happen. Duce Staley is out, possibly until October 10th (which is week 5, game 4 for Pittsburgh). News on Jerome Bettis should come later today or tomorrow. Willie Parker must be watched, should be picked up if you have a roster spot, and looks like he may be the opening game starter for Pittsburgh.

McNabb and Owens
Terrell Owens and Donovan McNabb are the new Shaq and Kobe. More. Tough to know what this can mean for your fantasy team (grabbing McNabb early doesn't really do much for you in fantasy leagues), but for the Eagles things should be just fine this season. In a Yahoo! Sports poll 75% of the fans said more trouble ahead for Eagles. Drama? Absolutely. Trouble? Don't be so sure (now Owens could somehow leave, but the Eagles will be one of the top 5 teams in the NFL-- with or without trouble, drama, and/or T.O.

Marvin Harrison
Back on July 26th we wrote about Harrison as the safest #1 pick among wide receivers. Many updated rankings are coming around to this viewpoint. Moss and T.O. have more upside, but with Keyshaun Johnson type risk (suspension or drop, respectively) and they are sometimes inconsistent. Torry Holt has Bolger and not Peyton. And, Chad Johnson's has slipped back in general opinion.

August 23
McNabb and Owens
Terrell Owens and Donovan McNabb are the new Shaq and Kobe. Latest.

August 22
Kerry Collins
Will Randy Moss give Collins (news and notes) a boost in Oakland? Definitely. Is it enough to move Collins up several notches in your QB rankings for your fantasy draft? Fox Sports thinks so (they have him ranked 8th. And, FF Today thinks so. They have Collins ranked 7th, tops among their 'Tier 4' QB's (btw- their tiered rankings are pretty cool because they tell you where quality dropoffs are at each position). But a lot will depend on which Kerry Collins (game log) shows up. Will it be the 5-TD, 371-yard Week 15 Collins? Or, the one that finished out the season with a 15 for 39 night that included 3 INT's and 3 fumbles (one of them lost)? We have him ranked 15th, which might be a little too low. Maybe somewhere in between is about right (Fantasy Football Jungle has him 11th in their consensus ranking).

Antonio Gates
Its possible the Chargers could get NFL commissioner Paul Tagliabue to reduce his 3-game suspension due to his lengthy contract hold out. But, as it is now, Gates will miss the first regular season game. This is enough to definitively make Tony Gonzalez your first choice among TE's.

Quarterbacks
Here are our fantasy QB rankings. Looking over the entire list here's who we think you should keep an eye on: Manning, Brady, Bulger, Hasselbeck, Delhomme, Vick, and Harringon. These are the 7 QB's we think you can get at the right spot because they are likely to be slightly overlooked. In the next tier of possible values is Aaron Brooks. There is starting to be a little bit of a buzz building around New Orleans, as if the fantasy stars may finally align for the Saints.

Joey Harrington
Last year, Harrington turned things around and not too many people have noticed. The reason why is because he didn't have a breakout year either. What he did was go from throwing 22 INT's to 12 (and more TD's than INT's for the first time in his 3-year career). And two of his best games came in the final 3 weeks of the season when defenses had to start giving Kevin Jones full respect. Dan Wetzel says there have been no boos "so far" this preseason, which he believes just might indicate Harrington may finally be on the verge of delivering like a 3rd pick (2002) should.

Fantasy Draft: First Pick
Is this the year to pick a QB (Peyton Manning) first overall? The difference in what you get from Manning vs other QB's may mean more than guessing which RB is going to have the best season. Worry about Priest Holmes has some mocks picking Shaun Alexander as high as 2nd overall. Ending up with Ahman Green, Julius Jones, or Curtis Martin as your top back with Manning pairs better than Delhomme or Brees with Shaun Alexander. Peyton Manning is consistent at a high level unlike any other player in the game. Tomlinson is right alongside. We think these two should be the beginning and end of your decision for first overall.

August 21
Fantasy Stats
The Huddle has a ton of great information. Check out their web site (good magazine too). Start with the depth chart and print it out.

Daunte vs Donovan
Peyton Manning is clearly the best QB. The debate begins at #2. Culpepper sees a lot more action inside the 10-yard line. And Culpepper consistently has put up better numbers than McNabb. So this year its understandable that a lot of rankings place Culpepper ahead. Yahoo! Big Board has Culpepper 14th overall and McNabb at 36.

August 18
Fantasy Football Rankings
Our updated NFL fantasy rankings for QB's and RB's are posted with commentary.

Cedric Benson
Cedric Benson is 'feverishly working out' in Austin, but the Bears say they have made their final offer.

Week 1 Preview
Schedule (makes you really want DirecTV). They couldn't really pick a better Monday Night game to kick off the season. Anything with T.O. (presuming of course that he is still with the Eagles) is a guaranteed ratings hit. Add in Michael Vick. The Eagles at Atlanta is the game of the week. Randy "green stuff" Moss in a Raiders uniform against the defending Super Bowl champs is a great way to officially kick-off the season on Thursday night (Sept 8th). On Sunday, nothing jumps off the page; but Kurt Warner vs Eli Manning is good enough.

Seattle Seahawks
We agree with SI that the Seattle Seahawks could be a 'serious threat' this season in the NFC. Shaun Alexander's rise up the fantasy draft charts is a clear indication that a lot of people expect this to Holgrem's year with the Seahawks. We expect around 11 wins.

Julius Jones vs. Kevin Jones
We like Julius over Kevin, but not everyone agrees.

August 9
Fantasy Football Rankings

Detailed rankings with stat projections at FF Today beginning with running backs. Most ESPN fantasy stuff is behind the Insider subscription wall. Complete rankings and analysis at Fox Sports. Projected fantasy stats and customizable rankings at FF Toolbox.

August 8
Pittsburgh Steelers
Duce Staley is questionable for the season opener after surgery today to repair a tear in his right knee. Jerome Bettis is the capable replacement for the Steelers, but Bettis is aging. While Roethlisberger was a steady hand last season, the running threat was just as crucial to success in Pittsburgh. All the questions and doubts are aimed New England's way right now, but perhaps there are starting to be a few questions for the Steelers too.

August 2
Terrell Owens
It's really hard to garner sympathy for Terrell Owens demands and his agent, Drew Rosenhaus's 'cause'. If T.O. would have been a leading factor in the playoff games that got the Eagles into the Super Bowl, then we might be swayed a little. But, Owens didn't even play in any of those games. Had the Eagles won the Super Bowl behind T.O.'s return to action, again that would be a point in his favor. Still, even if any of these scenario's were true, Owens signed a contract (a pretty good one at that). And so its time for T.O. to let it pass for now, prove everyone wrong this season, and then use that leverage to lobby for the change next season. But, let's not forget that T.O. did come to camp despite his feelings-- and at least that shows a lot of class.

July 31
NFL 2005 Strength of Schedule
The Oakland Raiders (sched) have the toughest schedule. They open at New England, then host KC, and then off to Philadelphia. And the Minnesota Vikings (sched) have the easiest schedule. Check out the full 2005 NFL Strength of Schedule rankings.

July 30
Randy Moss
Moss arrived at training camp for the silver-and-black Oakland Raiders driving his bright purple, custom-made Chevrolet Avalanche. Those who have been following Moss during the offseason say he's ready for a huge dominating season.

July 26
Top Wide Receivers
At this point, most opinions are merging. The top 3 wide receivers, in order, are: Randy Moss, Terrell Owens, and Chad Johnson according to Fantasy Asylum WR rankings and FFToday rankings. Sportsline ranks 'em by last year's stats so they have Mushin Muhammad on top even though everyone else thinks he's a one-hit fluke (especially now that he's playing for the Bears). As for us, Marvin Harrison may be inching past his prime, but the consistency makes him easily worth a top WR pick. Yes, even a smarter pick than Randy Moss.

Around the NFL
Here are the latest NFL rumors according to Fox Sports. The Lions are still trying to land Ty Law. ESPN says Detroit was 'excited and surprised' following Law's workout.

Chicago Bears
Yahoo! Sports kicked off this year's season previews with a look at the Chicago Bears. All we can say is that it really will be the Bad News Bears this season.

July 6
James Henry Smith
The "zealous" Pittsburgh Steelers fan passed away but has redefined dying and the traditional wake by getting propped up in front of a TV-- complete with a beer by his side. It was just the "way he was".

June 29
Upcoming NFL Dates
Training camps open July 24th, beginning with the Chicago Bears, and others. The first preseason game is the 'American Bowl' in Tokyo, Japan on Saturday August 6: Indy vs. Atlanta-- at 5:00 a.m. on the East coast. On Monday August 8 is the Hall of Fame Game in Canton, Ohio: Chicago vs. Miami. Week 1 preseason games are Thurs. August 11 through Mon. Aug. 15.The regular season kicks off on Thursday, September 8th: Oakland at New England. The rest of the games follow on Sunday September 11th and the first MNF is Philadelphia at Atlanta.

Robert Kraft
A curious move by the New England Patriots owner.

May 26
Kellen Winslow
Its looks like all of it (not just the motorcycle accident, but the contract hold out, etc) has finally caught up with Winslow-- a humble apology. By the way, the Browns TE is out for the year.

April 27
Super Bowl XL
Prediction and odds over at ESPN's SportsNation. The Eagles are favored (11/2) just slightly over New England (6/1).

April 23
2005 NFL Draft
Sportsline graded each of the first round picks. The best pick? Sportsline loves the Vikings pick of WR Troy Williamson 7th. Worst pick? Prisco hates the Lions pick of WR Mike Willisms with the 10th pick. But, even worse (according to Prisco) is the Redskins pick of Auburn QB Jason Campbell. Only problem with calling that the worst pick is failing to see that the Redskins have no intention (and don't want to) develop Ramsey. ESPN's draft analysis is a little more analytical, and a lot less edgy (but doesn't have quick eye catching grades). The most interesting thing is their comments about UCal QB Aaron Rodgers going from a possible #1 pick all the way down to #24.

February 6
Three Times by Three Points
New England Patriots-- winners: XXXVI: 20-17, XXXVIII: 32-29, XXXIX: 24-21.

A Quick History of the Super Bowl
The first two Super Bowls were won by the Green Bay Packers. The early 70's were dominated by the Miami Dolphins, but Pittsburgh is the team of the 70's. The 1980's were all about the San Francisco 49ers. The Cowboys were the team of the 90's, but the Buffalo Bills patented losing Super Bowl's in that decade by losing Super Bowl's 25, 26, 27, and 28. And now a new team to place among those remembered-- the New England Patriots are the first team of the 21st century having won 3 of the last 4 (all 3 by 3 points). The complete Super Bowl history, scores, and MVPs.

New England Patriots
The Patriots have won another Super Bowl. The Eagles seemed to get what they deserved (they didn't take advantage of opportunities). And, the Eagles didn't seem to want the game down the stretch, making for an anti-climatic ending to a game with a close score.

First Quarter Review
The takeaway for the Eagles is that 2 first quarter turnovers did not result in points for New England.

Super Bowl Commercials
2005. Best of all-time. Total collection.

New England Patriots
Tom Brady, and the Patriots, are minutes away from an attempt to stake a claim among the best QB's, and best NFL teams, of all time.

Super Bowl XXXIX
Last minute Super Bowl tidbits and crazy facts. There will be 34 cameras in Alltel Stadium. FOX/TSN game breakdown.

February 3
Super Bowl XXXIX
First off the lines are holding firm at 7 1/2. Now some picks: 6 out of 7 analysts (at Yahoo! Sports) agree-- its all Patriots. Mike Harmon stands alone. Previews: Yahoo! Sports, Matchups at FOX, and CNNSI web site is not really focused on the Super Bowl so much as they want you to know about the Model Search. Our computer says game will be very close (Pats won't cover), and our data-based analysis says Eagles win. See all our Super Bowl stats and picks.

Super Bowl XXXIX

January 31
Super Bowl XXXIX
Our computer Super Bowl Pick is posted, along with tons of charts, extra data and statistics, and our own partial analysis. The computer is giving a slight edge to the Patriots-- which is a lot less than Vegas. Not very many people are giving the Eagles much of a chance. But our analysis, after digging through a lot of numbers on paper, actually concludes that not only will Philadelphia put up a good fight... the Eagles may win the game.

January 23
Terrell Owens
T.O. will be in uniforn; playing is another ?

AFC Championships
Our computer says Pittsburgh by 2. Vegas has New England favored by 3. With the way the Patriots played last week its easy to see why both Vegas, and those betting, are pretty confident the Pittsburgh fantasy season will come to an end today. However, we believe last week's game may have changed things a little. Pittsburgh is battle tested now. They know how hard they need to play-- the entire game-- if they have any chance of winning. Second, our computer is saying Pittsburgh. And, finally, New England didn't get home-field advantage, and that just might make the difference. Its just might be the battle of Pennsylvania in Jacksonville in two weeks (Any way you slice it: Vick/Brady, Brady/McNabb, Roethlisberger/McNabb, or Vick/Roethlisberger it will be easy to promote, and a great Super Bowl-- but we say its Roethlisberger/McNabb).

NFC Championships
Philadelphia is a 5 point favorite in Vegas, and the Fanbay.net computer says 8.3. Will Vick make it to the Super Bowl? We don't think so. This game is too important to the Eagles. They have played all season for this game. Its time for Eagles fans to watch their team on Super Bowl Sunday.

January 18
NFL Conference Championships
Chris Carter breaks down the games over at Yahoo! Sports.

January 17
NFL Conference Championships
No surprises this year. The best 4 teams have advanced to play in the conference championships. Our NFL playoff picks for the AFC Championship (Sunday, 6:30, CBS) and NFC Championship (Sunday, 3, FOX) are now posted. Live Lines. As of 10pm EST Monday, New England is favored by 3 in Pittsburgh-- while our computer picks Pittsburgh by 2. And the Eagles are favored by 4 1/2-- the computer gives them an 8-point edge.

January 15
NFL Playoffs and Figure Skating
A possible battle over the remote as National Figure Skating and Michael Vick go head-to-head. A chance for the occasional NFL game watcher to sit down and catch some playoff action and see Vick in action this evening. But it is the earlier game that is the one to watch. Pittsburgh really does still need to prove that they are the real deal. At the end of the day its New England or Indianapolis that is expected to be in Jacksonville. Our computer NFL picks for today are Pittsburgh by 5.89 and Atlanta by 7.53. Vegas has the Steelers winning by 9 and Falcons by 7. Enjoy the games!

January 8
Football and the web
This just goes to show that you can find just about anything on the web. A Bonnie Bernstein fan site. For those wondering, she will be on the sidelines of the Broncos/Colts game. Here's Bonnie Bernstein's schedule (from her official web site, no less).

January 4
Wild Card Predictions
Our picks are up for the 4 wild card games. All playoff picks will be posted each week, as was done during the season. Also, see the final team NFL power rankings. Notably, Denver ranks higher than most people are currently thinking. All of the games are worth watching (except maybe STL/SEA). We think Denver should not be counted out in Indianapolis. The MIN/GB winner is up in the air. We think Minnesota may actually put things together, but if they don't a GB/ATL playoff match-up will bring back memories. Too bad they wouldn't be playing in Green Bay. One way or the other, looking at our power rankings, we think Atlanta is going to have a tough game on their hands no matter who wins MIN/GB. Ironically, perhaps Mike Tice could still save face. The NFC is so weak, it is not hard to imagine the Vikings making it to the Super Bowl. All right- enough of that. As for NYJ/SD, sadly the Chargers still need to prove themselves. Finally, well who really cares about STL/SEA.

Mike Tice
A "depressed coach", but finding a glimpse of hope from the fact that at least this year the Vikings are in the playoffs.

January 2
NFL Playoff Scenarios
Current playoff seeds and standings. ESPN breaks down all of the scenarios, but your head will be spinning. Just focus on a couple games-- like New Orleans at Carolina and the Jets at St. Louis.

January 1
Week 17
The final fantasy week gets more and more difficult each year as more and more players take the final week off-- or play substantially less minutes than usual. ESPN.com's John Clayton chimes in with a fantasy run-down for Week 17.
