2008 NFL Draft: April 26-27, 2008
Coverage: NLF.com and ESPN.
The draft is on ESPN TV. The first pick is 3pm Eastern on Saturday April 26. Rounds 1 and 2 are Saturday. The remaining rounds begin at 10am on Sunday April 27.
2008 Pre-Draft Talking Points: It's not shaping up as a draft with a lot of excitement or drama, especially considering the #1 pick is now off the table.
· Consensus Mock Picks: 1. Jake Long (OT-Michigan), 2. Chris Long (DE-Virginia), 3. Darren McFadden (RB-Arkansas), 4. Glenn Dorsey (DT-LSU), 5. Vernon Gholston (DE-Ohio State), 6. Matt Ryan (QB-Boston College), and Ryan Clady (OT-Boise State) more... Best mocks here, here, and here.
Two cents: A few players we believe will be good values in the draft. 1) Darren McFadden- maybe he isn't quite Reggie Bush, and few are as good as "A-D" was in his 1st year for Minnesota. However, McFadden is that type of player and that type of talent. Even the next best things to those guys is worth a high, high pick. 2) Glenn Dorsey: the dude is, literally, the full package for a DT. 3) Sleepers: Rashard Mendenhall and Mike Jenkins (news here, highlights here and player bio and stats here. Questions: Matt Ryan sure sounds like an All-American QB. Is there a 'but'? Anyways, enjoy the draft.
2008 Draft Picks:
1. Miami Dolphins (1-15): We believe that the Dolphins selected the correct Long, Jake. And Miami signed Jake Long to a long-term contract in the week leading up to draft day. This is a lot of money for an Offensive Tackle.
2. St. Louis Rams (3-13): Did the Rams reach with Chris Long? Probably should have went with other options.
3. Atlanta Falcons (4-12): It's too bad (due to Vick) that Falcons had to use their pick on a QB. But Ryan is a decent bet.
4. Oakland Raiders (4-12): The Raiders did what they had to do. McFadden is the biggest talent in the draft. At #4, it's a great pick.
5. Kansas City Chiefs (4-12): Dorsey is a great pick for the Chiefs, and an easy one at #5. With Atlanta grabbing Ryan at #3, the picks are starting to fall into place.
6. New York Jets (4-12): Vernon Gholston is a great pick-up for the Jets at #6. It was a good pick to have.
7. New Orleans Saints (*): The Saints got the guy they really wanted: Sedrick Ellis (DT-USC).
8. Jacksonville Jaguars (**). Derrick Harvey is a controversial pick, but given he is a Florida Gator, it's natural the Jaguars like this DE.
9. Cincinnati Bengals (7-9): Keith Rivers (Outside Linebacker from USC) was the expected choice at this spot.
10. New England Patriots (***): Jerod Mayo (LB-Tennessee) is the first true surprise of the draft. Not necessarily a bad pick, but most pundits didn't expect him to go this high.
* from San Francisco (5-11) to New England Patriots; then, on draft day, the Patriots traded the pick to the New Orleans Saints
** from Baltimore Ravens (5-11)
*** recieved from the New Orleans Saints for the trade that gave the Saints the #7 pick.

2007 Draft Recap:
The Cleveland Browns have their cake and eat it too-- passing on Brady Quinn with the 3rd pick in the draft and taking Joe Thomas. Then they watch Quinn slip all the way to 22nd and make a trade to pick him up too. Whether Quinn works out or not, it was a no-brainer that the Browns roll the dice on him at 22. While JaMarcus Russell may not be a Peyton Manning or Tom Brady it is very likely that he will be a stable NFL QB for a long time. Can Calvin Johnson break the WR jinx in Detroit? NFL Draft 2007
