2006 NBA Draft: ANALYSIS
One tangible indicator of success in the NBA is the length of the trip through the NCAA tournament. Dwyane Wade shocked the NCAA world by taking Marquette all the way to the Final Four. Carmelo Anthony won the NCAA tournament as a freshman for Syracuse. By this type of logic, Tyrus Thomas is a strong pick. And, though lower picks-- Jordan Farmar and Ryan Hollins (both UCLA) could turn out to be good NBA players. Finally, Renaldo Balkman for a similar reason (South Carolina won the NIT 2 years in a row). Balkman is a multi-category threat-- kindof like Ben Wallace but with much better scoring potential.
Top 3: Bargnani has a frame, but no history of success in Europe (seems more like Darko than Dirk). Hard to see an immediate translation to success on the court in Toronto. Aldridge will get time on the court in Portland to prove his worth. Morrison cracks under pressure. He has a great ability for the game, and everyone will be hoping for his success, but could take some time.
Underdog Pick: Ronnie Brewer. Brewer is a 6-7, 228 point guard (stats). He's got one of the weirdest shots in the world, but Michael Jordan is behind the guy feeding him advice.
Random Thoughts:
· Best spot to read about the players and see past stats: Yahoo Sports draft recap here.
· Aldridge for Tyrus Thomas took some guts for Bulls GM Jim Paxson.
· We like Brandon Roy better than Randy Foye.
· J.J. Redick will be a good NBA player, but hard to see any fantasy impact.
· Tallest pick? Kosta Perovic, at 7-2, was drafted by the Warriors in the 2nd round.
· Hard to question the Hawks 5th pick, Shelden Williams. Duke has sent similar talent to the NBA: Brand and Boozer.
· Marcus Williams won't be a fantasy star out of the gate, but training under Jason Kidd was the best thing that could happen to him.
· Kevin Pritchard has earned the right to become the Portland Trail Blazers next GM. His draft management was excellent. Adding Aldridge, Roy, LaFrentz, and Dickau has helped turnover the franchise.
