Iverson Trade
Nuggets fans are voting with their wallets. They like the deal. Story.
Iverson Deal
Allen Iverson's comments on the trade here: "I'm very happy about the trade. Denver's style of play fits my strengths. I'm looking forward to playing with Carmelo, the rest of the Denver Nuggets, and for George Karl, who is a proven winner. I'd like to thank my fans in Philadelphia. They've been with me every step of the way, through all the ups and downs. I will always be grateful to the 76ers organization, and I wish them the very best."
The 'Melo Melee
Everyone's got an opinion about the brawl, and they should. Lupica calls it "The Garden of Evil" here. Another story, about the Knicks, says "All that embarassment, all that disdain, should be aimed inward, not at the Denver Nuggets -- or anyone else for that matter" (read here). And here, both "Isiah, Karl get a pass from sheriff Stern." And Karl wanted revenge here. Who's fault from a coaching perspective? Karl or Isiah? Stein lays it out here. And some facts from this story here: this wasn't Mardy Collins first hard foul of the year, and it's not the first time Isiah has complained about other teams running up the score against him. And, no NBA fan can forget, Isiah was part of the "Bad Boys" in Detroit (column here). The game play-by-play is here and full game recap here. There was a timeout with 2:01 to play and the Nuggets up 17. Common sense might suggest taking out your star players so they don't get injured (on this Isiah does have a point). But, even if your running up the score, its hard to say, 'yeah, we hit the guys 'cause it just wasn't fair to lose by that much'. The Knicks have dished out 3 20-point losses this season, so Thomas should be able to take it. Anthony and J.R. Smith were playing in front of their high school and hometown friends. If any of us made it to the NBA and could do a reverse dunk in Madison Square Garden for our friends, we'd do it? The NBA is entertainment.
Denver Nuggets
Is it time to buy those powder blue (logo history here) jerseys here? Have the Denver Nuggets gone from barely a playoff team, to a wasted season, to NBA Championship contender, all in just 4 days? The Nuggets official site says "The Answer is Here". Iverson's best season in Philly was 2000-2001, when the Sixers made it to the NBA Finals. That team had Dikembe Mutombo and Theo Ratliff down low (team stats here). Finally, Iverson will have a good, active Center to play with (Marcus Camby) in Denver-- and you throw in the NBA's leading scorer (Carmelo Anthony) and you have a possible championship in Denver. But, now, they just need to make the playoffs.
"The 'Melo Melee"
Another perspective, from Adrian Wojnarowski at Yahoo Sports!, blaming George Karl. Read it here. It basically leans in the direction we jokingly mentioned below-- that fighting (tough fouls, revenge, etc) should be embraced by the NBA.
December 17
"The Brawl at the Garden"
It's big news everywhere, except.. not surprisingly.. NBA.com (fight? what fight?).
NBA Fights
The natural stance, which will be covered later, is that the NBA has big problems. This brawl, even though it's clearly no Pistons-Pacers thing, highlights some NBA problems. But (tongue-in-cheek), with hockey trying to clean up fights, maybe there needs to be a sport with some fights. As long as they ring a big chained fence around the court, maybe more fights is a direction the NBA should just embrace.
"The Brawl at the Garden"
As Knicks Coach/GM Isiah Thomas said, the Nuggets were up 20, with a minute to go, but all their stars were still in the game, and putting on a show. Knicks back-up, back-up guard Mardy Collins (just into the game since it was a huge blow-out) locked up J.R. Smith on a breakaway so he couldn't dunk. It was a tough foul. But then a huge fight broke out-- involving the Nuggets big stars (which shouldn't have even been in the game at the time, as Isiah Thomas said). Marcus Camby and NBA leading scorer Carmelo Anthony (who will surely get the worst suspension) are likely to see big suspensions. Looks like the Nuggets need Iverson, immediately. And, we don't think Iverson's bad reputation is all earned, cause he's a great competitor. But, your average NBA spectator would say Iverson would fit right in with the Nuggets brawlers. Nuggets-Knicks: box score, story, video at ESPN NBA.
December 16
Allen Iverson
First, Denver said no way. Now, it's looking like they have the right pieces to make a deal work-- like 2 bad contracts: Nene's horrible deal (why Denver paid him so much before he ever truly proved himself will be one of those all-time questions) and Joe Smith's. Story.
East vs West
Eastern Conference fans can talk all day about how Miami won the NBA Finals and therefore the East is still competitive in the NBA. However, the numbers this season are a reality check. 6 of the 7 teams that do not make the playoffs in the Western Conference would make the playoffs in the East. And when you hear the name's of the teams that are out of the playoffs in the West, you can see why they would be competitive in the East (Sacramento, the Clippers, the Sonics, Hornets, T-Wolves, and Blazers). The best record in the East (Cleveland at 14-8) would be 6th in the Western Conference. Statistically, there is simply no comparison: the East is 2nd class. NBA standings here.

Andris Biedrins
In terms of fantasy basketball, Biedrins is this year's Boris Diaw (the surprise, solid player).
October 27
Fantasy Hoops
Two things to check out here: NBA Depth Chart and Top Fantasy NBA Players Rankings (including sleepers, stats, and commentary).
Andrew Bynum
The Lakers just-turned 19-year old (today), 7-foot project center will be the starter to open the season (because Kwame Brown and Chris Mihm are hurt). If your league goes deep, he's worth adding. It's possible he could earn/keep the job.
October 19
Stephon Marbury
"Starbury" is starting to earn the name. He's all over the media lately-- latest.
NBA.com
The NBA.com website got a makeover. It's a nice improvement- clean look.
October 18
2006 NBA Season
Getting ready for the season? Check out our conference previews and predictions: NBA Eastern Conference Prediction and NBA Western Conference Prediction. In the East, we think, by default (since Miami won't try) the Nets end up with the best record. We think the Sixers make the playoffs. In the West, Golden State has a winning season for the first time since 1993-94 and they (barely) make the playoffs. Houston and the Lakers probably battle for the other last slot.
October 14
Gerald Wallace
Pretty strong words in today's post over at Rotoworld: Gerald Wallace "could be the fantasy MVP" (link).
October 12
Fantasy Hoops
NBA.com mock fantasy draft here. Amare goes 6th!
Amare Stoudemire
One of the bigger draft day questions. The latest indications on the court indicate he's basically fine and will be healthy to start the season. However, it does not appear that he will play full minutes for a full season. The Suns may start looking at him as icing on the cake; and not a main ingredient. Fantasy-wise that seems to translate into about 80% of what he was at his peak-- plus injury risk considerations (no small concern). And that translates into about a 35th to 45th pick in your draft. But, can you get a better read, and a steal? Read up on #1: story, opinion, career stats, and his Yahoo player news. And STAT's official website here.
NBA Fantasy Sleepers
So far, here's a short list.. some food for thought: As a late pick- a spot opens up for Jarvis Hayes (F-Was) on the high-scoring Wizards, after Jared Jeffries departed for NY. He can score.. plus, to prove his worth he tries hard for boards and steals. Portland has indicated that Zach Randolph is a building block. He's slipping on most people's boards and you may be able to pick him at a good spot. Watch: Nazr Mohammed, David West, Erick Dampier, and Chuck Hayes. For rookies, we like (and everyone is talking about) Portland's Brandon Roy. But he will have initial fights for playing time with Jack, Dixon, and Webster. A guy who is making the most of early preseason playing time is Boston's pick from Kentucky, 6-1 guard Rajon Rondo. A real, real sleeper is Charlie Bell of Milwaukee. The Michigan State alum has all the skills, but just not sure if he will get consistent playing time. And what about the T-Wolves Eddie Griffin. Same story. Well, not exactly.
Sheridan Snides Cleveland?
In his excellent Air Jordan, "Silent Mike" story, ESPN's Chris Sheridan says the Eastern Conference "levels off considerably after you get past Detroit, Chicago, New Jersey and Miami" (link).
Michael Jordan
"I don't want to be.. a used-car salesman." But he will play golf to get "Charlotte Bobcats Arena" a new name.
October 10
Indiana Pacers
Reggie Miller speaks up about Stephen Jackson here. Well said. Right or wrong, the point is that Jackson shouldn't even be putting himself in that situation. Meanwhile, in other Pacers news, Jermaine O'Neal may miss a game for his lawsuit regarding the 11/19/04 brawl in Detroit (story).
October 9
Fantasy Hoops
Getting ready for a draft? Check out the latest mock draft at Roto World here. Also, see Funston's Big Board here.
Golden State Warriors
The starting line-up has been set: PG: Baron Davis, SG: Jason Richardson, SF: Mickael Pietrus, PF: Mike Dunleavy, C: Troy Murphy. For now, DaJuan Wagner will replace the injured Jason Richardson (article). This gives Wagner the chance to prove his abilities. He is a must watch for possible fantasy value as a 6th man/injury fill-in. New (old) coach, Don Nelson is going (very) small with this line-up. Upside fantasy value: Pietrus, Murphy-- and maybe even Dunleavy.
Charlotte Bobcats
A bottom-up push to make the playoffs. Second-year guard Raymond Felton is once again talking about the playoffs-- says the Bobcats could get the 6, 7, or 8 seed in the East (story). With Michael Jordan around (story) it just might be possible.
Indiana Pacers
Is Indianapolis the new Portland? Are the Pacers the new Trail Blazers? Is Jermaine O'Neal the culprit? There is no doubt he provides, at least, a connection-- having played in Portland for 4 seasons beforing being traded to Indiana for the 2000-2001 season (story, and, the fans don't seem to mind). The Pacers should start enforcing discipline or a reputation is in blossom.
October 2
NBA: New Ball
For the first time in 35 years, the NBA is changing the ball. Shaquille O'Neal says: "Look for shooting percentages to be way down" (story).
September 30
Stephon Marbury
Marbury has just finished up a nationwide tour to promote his 'Starbury' line of "shoes, kicks, and threads". It's all viewable online here, and sold at Steve and Barry's here.
Kirk Hinrich
"I think we'll definitely get out of the first round of the playoffs." Way to set the bar really high for the Bulls this year. It seems the Bulls, top-down, have not instilled the team with a big goal and big vision. It seems more like Paxson and the Bulls brass still view themselves as rebuilding-- Ben Wallace is just a mentor for a young team, and not the key piece to make them a title contender. We will see if the language changes during the preseason, but for now, Hinrich's comments seem to be disappointing. Hinrich (a Kansas alum) and the Bulls will play Seattle, and Hinrich's former Jayhawk teammate, Nick Collison, in Lawrence Kansas at Allen Fieldhouse on October 15th (full story here).
September 29
Bonzi Wells
Bonzi fits well with the Rockets (story on his 2-year deal-- fittingly, for the Rockets, in a China newspaper here). They needed someone to complement McGrady and Yao Ming.
Amare Stoudemire
Striving to be 100% by time the season starts (story)? Wasn't everyone taking that for granted? Kind of raises a flag.
The Big NBA City Swap
Is a massive franchise trade in the works? Will the Kings move to Las Vegas? Will New Orleans move back home? Will the Sonics move into Oklahoma City? And, will the Blazers take the Sonics place in Seattle? That is the general essence of this NY Sun piece here. And several other cities are actively seeking teams: Anaheim, Kansas City (new arena in 2007), Louisville, and San Jose. Regarding the Sacramento Kings: when will the Maloof brothers stop talking in veiled language. Obviously they want the Kings in Vegas? They run a fun and successful casino, the Palms resort, in Vegas. Sacramento seems to be doing their best to keep the team. But, the Maloof brothers seem to be setting up the negotiations for failure (story. And, what about OKC/NO. Remember that the Kings, for a few seasons, were the "Kansas City-Omaha Kings" (see link and more). Will, the Hornets continue on as the New Orleans/Oklahoma City Hornets? We actually think that may represent the future for sports franchises. There are a lot of cities capable of supporting 1/2 an NBA team but not the whole thing. Some teams could have a regional name, instead of a city. such as the Missouri (KC/St.Louis) Trailblazers or the Ohio (Columbus/Cincinnati) Supersonics. Plus, what better way to increase your fan base than to have 2-- or even 3 or 4-- cities as your home? In fact, maybe the NBA should experiment with a 'traveling team'. That would be great for league marketing. Games in all sorts of places--St.Louis, Columbus, Cincinnati, Pittsburgh, Tampa-- even international regular season games.
September 19
Fantasy NBA Hoops
Must read here. Team-by-team fantasy spin.
September 18
Minnesota TimberGuards
The T-Wolves (roster here) have cornered the market in mediocre guards: Mike James, Marko Jaric, Troy Hudson, Trenton Hassell, Rashad McCants, Randy Foye, Anthony Carter, and Bracey Wright. You could technically even count Ricky Davis.
September 16
Denver Nuggets
Discussions (noted here) about bringing Bonzi to town continue. Note to Denver management: 'You need a 3-point specialist-- a real shooting guard'. The Nuggets just don't get it. When you have a wing-guy like Carmelo, you need a 'bail-out' that he can pass the ball to-- a guy that just spots up and shoots. A John Paxson. A Craig Hodges. Bonzi Wells is a great player. He would give the Nuggets a big boost. But, eventually the Nuggets will discover the real problem, they will solve it, and then they will go deep in the playoffs led by 'Melo.
September 12
New York Knicks
This column is much needed comic relief for all you NBA fans looking to get back in the season. Page 2 is especially good-- is this guy serious? Things may turn around after the 2008-2009 season which "will determine the Knicks long term". And between now and then, he says (seriously) "the Knicks' backcourt play may decline a bit in 2007-08". But all is not lost yet-- he does have something to say about this season: "I think the team will improve to 35-40 wins.. and contend for the final playoff spot".
September 11
2006-2007 NBA Season
Training camp officially begins October 3rd. Although several teams are heading to Europe and will begin training October 1. Preseason games start October 5th in Spain and France. Preseason games in the U.S. begin October 9th. Regular season starts October 31. NBA Schedule here.
Fantasy NBA
NBA.com's Fantasy Resource Center (go there) is a big, big step up from last year. Get yourself in the mind for the upcoming season by starting at the depth charts: Western Conference here and Eastern here. And then the position-by-position player rankings here. Yao Ming is the top Center. And Arenas, Paul, and Iverson are ahead of Nash at PG because of "nagging injuries" and Amare's return (read).
September 1
USA Basketball
After losing to Greece the U.S. will play for the 'LeBronze' medal at the FIBA World Championships. You have to lose a big one to understand what your playing for. And the only legit response for the U.S. is a statement in the bronze medal against Argentina. A buzzer-to-buzzer thrashing. What does it say about the state of the NBA? Maybe a hint of complacency, who knows? Will there be even more international players in coming years? Does the 'defense'-oriented (read: can't shoot the basketball) NBA need to shift back to the fundamentals of passing and shooting? Will any team really get the message? We have belabored that point on this site for the last year or so. Defense is the term used to cover the fact that teams can't put the ball in the basket. When Indiana and Detroit play 68-64 Eastern Conference championshp games its not a defensive battle. It was a clear reflection of why the U.S. loses in international competition. Ok, now that the rant is out. The other issue is the format. In one game anything is possible. Put the U.S. in a 3-game series with any team in the world and the U.S. wins. Period.
August 16
FIBA World Championships
Team USA will be off and running August 19th (in Japan) vs. Puerto Rico. The World Championship game is September 3. Rosters and news for Team USA here and here. Official web site here. No surprise, U.S. is the huge favorite (70 bid) at TradeSports-- prices here.
August 8
Allen Iverson
The Sixers said there will be no trade. But, ESPN's John Hollinger isn't buying it. At ESPN Insider (subscription) here, he lays out the odds for 5 teams that have a mix of players they could send to Philly. Hollinger puts Boston in the lead- saying any combination of their young talent would work (such as a combo of any three of Al Jefferson, Delonte West, Gerald Green, Ryan Gomes, Kendrick Perkins, Tony Allen, or Dwayne Jones). Plus, the Celtics could throw in the experience of Wally Szczerbiak. Hollinger also puts the Warriors, Knicks, Hawks, and Nuggets in the mix. Golden State definitely has the best young talent to offer. And Denver has the veteran tandem of K-Mart and Andre Miller. There's other speculation out there, such as T-Mac for The Answer here; but some Philly fans explain, "We love him".

2006-2007 NBA Schedule
Next seasons complete NBA schedule has been released here, beginning Tuesday, October 31 (92 days away) with a TNT playoff first-round rematch doubleheader: Chicago at Miami followed by Phoenix at the Lakers. Team-by-team schedules here. NBA.com breaks down the 10 best nights of the season here, including: the Hornets playing in New Orleans on November 5th and Kobe vs Shaq on Christmas Day.
July 20
Denver Nuggets
The Nuggets are a franchise heading in the right direction. Carmelo Anthony, like Dwyane Wade, is one of the best young players to build a team around. However, they seem to step in the wrong direction before they get it right. For example, last year they needed a pure shooting guard. Months into the season they decide to trade for Ruben Patterson. Why? Now, in the off-season they get the message and add J.R. Smith (story). Moving toward a solution. But now, another lesson. The Nuggets should be paying $10 million a year (story) for proven talent. Nene is anything but proven (career stats here). It's just the wrong thing to do-- even if it works out. Luckily, 'Melo is around to make things work in Denver.
July 5
Chicago Bulls
Free agents can't officially sign until Wednesday, July 12th. However, the reports are that Ben Wallace has agreed to sign with the Bulls (roster). Finally, Jerry Reinsdorf has opened up his pockets. For years he dumped quality players (like Artest, Brad Miller, and Elton Brand). And then the Bulls essentially started over from scratch. Wisely, in our opinion, Reinsdorf sat back while the young team struggled over the past couple years. Now there is a nucleus. And, its time to give back to the fans. Its too early to say how big of an impact Wallace will make-- after all, the Bulls struggled just to make the playoffs. So, not sure if Wallace alone gets them to the Conference Finals. But, its still a major game changing move.
July 3
NBA Draft Analysis
One tangible indicator of success in the NBA is the length of the trip through the NCAA tournament. Dwyane Wade shocked the NCAA world by taking Marquette all the way to the Final Four. Carmelo Anthony won the NCAA tournament as a freshman for Syracuse. By this type of logic, Tyrus Thomas is a strong pick. And, though lower picks-- Jordan Farmar and Ryan Hollins (both UCLA) could turn out to be good NBA players. Finally, Renaldo Balkman for a similar reason (South Carolina won the NIT 2 years in a row). Balkman is a multi-category threat-- kindof like Ben Wallace but with much better scoring potential. More coverage at NBA Draft.
NBA Draft
The official results are here, via NBA.com (with analysis here). There are more links and coverage at NBA Draft.
Kevin McHale
At some point, Minnesota will wake up and realize their biggest problem is McHale. Don't really know what to add or how to explain it, but just about everything McHale has done (from the front office to his stint as head coach) has been miserable. A similar view here.
June 28
Andrea Bargnani
Dirk? Or, Darko? The answer here: there is "a lot of work to do". In terms of his stats (game-by-game and career) in the Euro League, Bargnani is not exactly a star.
June 27
NBA Draft
#1 Pick? ESPN's Chad Ford has Tyrus Thomas (link). SI.com's Ian Thomsen has LaMarcus Aldridge. Andrea Bargnani is the 2nd choice in both those draft rankings. SI's Chris Ekstrand says the Raptors take Andrea Bargnani #1 (here). So does SportsLine's Tony Mejia here. But Rivals.com, via Yahoo! Sports, has Adam Morrison first (here). The news report out of Toronto say its down to Aldridge or Bargnani.
June 8
Gary Payton
What happened to The Glove? Game One of the NBA Finals: In just 35 seconds in the 4th quarter, Payton lost Jason Terry twice, giving up 2 wide open 3-pointers. In between those 2 plays, Payton clanked a 22-footer off the side of the rim.
June 7
Portland Trail Blazers
The billionaire co-founder of Microsoft has had enough, it's time to dress up the Blazers (and the Rose Garden) and sell 'em to whoever will take them (story). What's with the sappy comments on the Blazers web site: "unassuming athletes who pride themselves on the quality craftsmanship of their game".
NBA Draft
Fanball's latest draft projection, here, is missing the fact that Adam Morrison is flying up the charts. Charlotte Bobcats GM and head coach (story), Bernie Bickerstaff: "It will be very difficult for Toronto to pass up on him" (Bickerstaff interview here).
NBA Finals
Dallas has home court. And, Wade is under the weather. Equals: Mavericks a 59/41 favorite to win it all; via TradeSports prices.
June 3
2006 NBA Finals
At last, something fresh and new this year from the NBA. No more Lakers. No more Detroit. No San Antonio. No Bulls or Rockets either. That's it: 5 teams with the last 19 titles (NBA Champions history) dating back to the 1986 Boston Celtics. It's the Miami Heat and Dallas Mavericks bringing new life to the NBA game.
Mark Cuban
The poster child of NBA conspiracies and complaining about the referees has made it to the NBA Finals. What it says to the rest of us is that anything is possible. There aren't hidden forces and conspiracies holding people back. If you work hard you can make your dreams come true. Mark Cuban is a passionate NBA owner who really, intensely cares about winning. He talks the game (and business and life) at Blog Maverick here. And Cuban has spent countless hours with Dallas Coach Avery Johnson to make the team what it is today. It's a big congratulations to Cuban and the energy he brings to the NBA. And it's also kind of a nod at the immaturity he has shown at times in complaining about calls and acting like hard work won't eventually pay off. Guess even as a billionaire its possible to still see the odds as stacked against you.
May 31
Toronto Raptors
The latest on the number one pick in the June 28th NBA Draft here (Andrea Bargnani), here (trade down, scroll to bottom of link), and here (Adam Morrison?).
Orlando Magic
You can't make this stuff up: "Orlando is in the market for a shooting guard, small forward and a big man" (story).
Phoenix Suns
They're already talking post-title celebration details in Phoenix (story).
Shaquille O'Neal
Every now and then, the real Shaq makes it through. Most of the time the media gangs up on him and makes him out to be anything other than what he is: real, laid-back, and light-hearted. He's gone all Godfather, comparing Kobe to Sonny and Wade to Michael (link).
May 24
NBA Draft
The 2006 NBA Draft is just over a month away: June 28th. The draft order and official NBA coverage is here. Top 3 picks: Toronto, Chicago (via NY), Charlotte. ESPN Insider is now projecting that Andrea Bargnani will be the Raptors pick at #1. The 7-0 Italian is being compared to Nowitzki. HoopsHype (mock nba draft here) has LeMarcus Aldridge tops over Bargnani. Both mocks have Morrison 3rd to Charlotte. But ESPN slots Tyrus Thomas #2 and slides Aldridge to 4th. Also see NBADraft.net mock here, InsideHoops mock here, and Mejia and Doyel at SportsLine here.
May 20
Detroit Pistons
The Pistons showed the tenacity of a champion in the final minutes of Game 6 in Cleveland. But, its tired and old. The Pistons are always here deep in the playoffs. From Laimbeer, to Rodman, to Ben Wallace, the hard-core, grind-it-out, defense of the Pistons has been consistently rewarded by the NBA. 38-37 at half time is a Pistons style game. Kobe and Shaq have been the players to hate in the NBA. But it can't be long before fans grow tired of seeing the Pistons, year-after-year, playing 'tough defense' to win their sloppy, low-scoring games.
Shaquille O'Neal
Again, it comes down to fan perception dominating the games; or at least the impressions of the games and the refs calls. The fans believe that Jason Collins and Tyson Chandler.. or Vlade Divac.. should get half the calls when guarding Shaq. It's not possible that Shaq is a much bigger, and better, player. The games need to be called in a way that reigns in Shaq's size, not rewards it. In the center dominated, early days of the NBA (Bill Russell, Wilt Chamberlin) big centers were just bigger than other players and therefore they scored more and dominated inside. Now, with Shaq, being bigger is a liability. The refs need to mitigate his size in order to, basically, appease fans. Shaq could have dominated the last 10 years if not for this view that Vlade and Shaq (and worse, Collins and Shaq) are equals. That's just the facts.
Jason Terry
Raja Bell. Jason Terry. Absolutely no comparison. And yet the same suspension. What's strange is that the fan backlash against good players like Kobe Bryant made the decision to suspend Raja tougher than suspending Terry. The general fan perception is that Kobe deserves it so Raja should be able to clothesline him. And then the NBA suspends Jason Terry for something not even remotely close to the severity.
May 18
NBA Playoff Format
There is definitely more to the 7-game series than meets the eye. Five games and Dallas and Cleveland sneak away with upset victories. Seven games is a different story. That is part of the reason why upsets are rare for the NBA Finals. If you can win three 7-game series just to get there, you have earned the trip and proven you have the best team in the Conference. It won't be easy for Dallas, or Cleveland, but they do have Game 6 opportunities in front of home crowds.
Cleveland vs Detroit
Who is making a name for themselves this year? Well, certainly LeBron James. And, a nod to Anderson Varejo too. But the real star for the Cavs is coach Mike Brown. The craft he is mastering from the bench is which guys to play at which times. As for Detroit, no one should feel bad if the Pistons lose. The Pistons, for over 20 years, have been right in the thick of just about every major playoff run. They have been to the NBA Finals the last 2 seasons.
May 15
Justin Hughes
More than a game. The story of Larry Hughes little brother is the NBA equivalent of James Dungee-- the son of NFL head coach Tony Dungee (Indianapolis Colts) (background). The Cleveland Cavaliers have rallied behind their teammate in a big way. Perhaps, an example of team basketball on a level even beyond what the Pistons have become known for only on the court. Following their Game 4 victory, the Cavs are flying to St. Louis to attend Justin's funeral (story). Larry Hughes has a Family Foundation that supports donors and recipients of organ transplants (details). Justin died at the age of 20 after a tough life of health problems resulting from a heart defect from birth (more).
May 13
Mark Cuban
Just a wild guess here, but we presume Cuban won't be complaining about the referees tonight. Might not even cross his mind. But those of us who have watched Cuban lead the whining tirades over referees, can't help but see the irony in the Mavs 1-point win over the Spurs-- in a game where Dallas had 50 free throw attempts (to 32 for the Spurs) (box score) and Tim Duncan fouled out. Kind of nice when it goes your way, eh Mark? Maybe Cuban can give the refs a big shout out like "finally the refs are calling these games right!"

The NBA Video Blog is worth a daily stop: here.
2006 Scoring
In a sign of a revitalizing NBA game-- for the first time since the 1981-82 season, 3 players averaged over 30 points per game for the season: LeBron James, Allen Iverson, and Kobe Bryant. See this page at NBA.com for all 2005-2006 and historical scoring stats, such as Kobe had 27 games of 40+ points. Next best was Iverson with 15.
Boris Diaw
We had to do a double-take, but here is someone raving about a player on the Suns besides Nash.
2006 NBA MVP
Our view on Nash is that it should have been closer than it was. But, for whatever reason, the media journalists that vote for the NBA MVP are just fixated with Steve Nash. That wasn't the case for the Sporting News, which gave each NBA team one vote (the ballot was sent to the main office and the team's general manager, coach, or equivalent cast the team's vote). The result? Basically a 4-way split. LeBron James and Nash got 8 first-place votes each. And, Dirk and Kobe got 6 first-place votes each. That sounds more reasonable. There really should have been more debate this year. Story. On Tuesday, Sporting News will officially announce a tie for MVP between Nash and LeBron.
May 7
2006 NBA MVP
It's official. Story and results here.
May 6
Phoenix Suns
The success of the Suns goes far beyond Steve Nash. It is the offensive system of Mike D'Antoni. D'Antoni's offense opens up the floor and rewards players for being themselves-- driving to the basket and taking shots. It makes every player on the team more comfortable. There is not the usual suspecting look from D'Antoni when a bench player throws up a 3 with 18 seconds left on the shot clock and a 20+ point lead. It's encouraged. And it breeds comfort and winning. The difference in the series comes down to this: Phil Jackson is an experienced, and masterful, playoff coach. His team was prepared and came out and nearly took this series by slowing the Suns down and playing team ball unlike that seen any time before with Kobe on the court. But, D'Antoni wised up in the series. The Suns made some adjustments. And by late in Game 5 the Suns offense started to click. And it was series over. Mike D'Antoni continues to re-energize the NBA game and maybe its just possible to outscore teams and win in the playoffs-- regardless of whether your tallest guys on the court are Boris Diaw and Tim Thomas.
Kobe Bryant
In the words of wisdom from Charles Barkley, Kobe was "selfish" in the 2nd half because he only took 3 shots. In Barkley's twisted logic Kobe wasn't shooting because he wanted to prove nobody but him could do it. The more likely scenario is that it just wasn't happening for the Lakers in Game 7. And, Kobe-- realizing most of the same players would be back with him a year from now in another playoff series-- wanted to just let his teammates get some Game 7 experience. The other scenario is that the double-teams from the Suns were coming every time and as much as Kobe wants to take over, it seemed clear the Suns would do anything to make sure he wouldn't. Kobe's been selfish in the past-- but this clearly was not a game (or series) where that was the case. As Kenny Smith said, Kobe should have been more aggressive at times because the Lakers team wasn't good enough for Kobe to let the team game approach work every time.
Cleveland Cavs
The whole season is starting to make sense now. All of the off season moves are starting to pay off. The Cavs have assembled all sorts of talent and experience around LeBron James. And Mike Brown (profile) is doing a near-perfect job of coaching. When you have so many role players (Flip Murray, Damon Jones, Donyell Marshall, Alex Varejao, and Eric Snow) its tough to know when to use them. Brown did a great job in Game 6 giving Marshall, Snow, and Murray considerable time down the stretch, and in OT, because it was working. No need to go back to Gooden and Ilgauskas (and Larry Hughes was quiet too)-- they will be needed to fight another day. For Cleveland fans, this win proves the franchise is heading in the right direction. The teams depth has come together at just the right time. Danny Ferry (here) did a fantastic job of assembling the pieces (including enough of the 3-point shooters that come out of nowhere in key playoff games), and Dan Gilbert and Usher (here) are doing a good job paying the bills. And, Mike Brown knows how to use all the pieces. Detroit will be tough, but for Cavs fans at least they are fighting the fight this year.
Washington Wizards
A lot of 'what-ifs' from the series. Michael Wilbon breaks it down here calling the end of the series "a predictable finish" because of the 3 blown leads. And, for next year two nuggets: first, Arenas has made a name for himself and two, Eddie Jordan knows how to get the best out of his players-- especially the job done coaching Caron Butler.

NBA Playoffs
'Bad calls', conspiracy theories, and suspensions are where the talk is. But, outside of rooting interests, many of the games themselves have been memorable, including: Shaq's 30/20 closeout in Chicago; LeBron's 45 vs Arenas' 44 points in Cavs/Wizards game 5; the Kings grabbing games 3 and 4 from the Spurs; Kobe's two buzzer beaters in game 4; and the Sun's back-to-the-wall OT win in L.A. to take Game 6. More Raja
Raja publicity: stock up. And all publicity is supposed to be good. But, before the game last night Raja had a good (though quiet), respected reputation in the league. However, he may be emerging as the next Ron Artest instead. A tough defender, able to score, but someone that a) loses their temper on the court and b) says just about anything off it (story). A day after his "unnecessary and excessive" (link) foul on Kobe, and within hours of being handed a 1-game suspension by the league, Raja's back trash talking. Get a grip. You play basketball, not Ultimate Fight. And there's more to life and basketball then a perpetual focus of animosity toward one person.
Raja Bell
Raja Bell gets an apparent compromise one-game suspension (story). We say compromise because there are those that believe Bell does not have the ability to settle down and play a tough playoff basketball game against Kobe and that maybe a return in the next series would have been a more appropriate suspension. For those that think Kobe gets all the calls, or its only because it's Kobe-- think clothesline. Watch the play too, because its not just the deliberate clothesline, but the follow through -- with the other hand -- that made some form of suspension necessary. Suns Executive Jerry Colangelo is completely clueless in making the relative argument that its ok to clothesline because it was leading up to that. It went both ways-- Bell was all over Kobe throughout the entire game-- and vice versa. But Kobe never outright lost his cool and forgot its a game of basketball. Colangelo needs to get his head examined-- and this is the guy representing Team USA Basketball? More later.
Raja Bell
The NBA has consistently rewarded tough defense. And Raja Bell tried to do that on Tuesday night. But Bell has yet to learn the nuances of playing someone tough and getting under their skin. It doesn't mean you brutalize the guy your guarding throughout the game. Every person who plays hoops has played against a player who doesn't know the difference. Raja is that guy. And the refs should have called it out. In one of the earlier games in the series it was clear that the Lakers were trying to play real tough on Nash and get under his skin. The refs picked up on it and Smush Parker has 2 fouls in a minute and was on the bench. Problem was solved and the game flowed. In Tuesday's game-- following Kobe's Game 4 heroics-- the Suns sent Raja Bell out to intimidate Kobe. The refs should have seen it coming and they shouldn't stand for this type of play (by simply calling the game like they did with Nash earlier in the series). They let the game spin out of control-- leading to Raja's eventual takedown.
NBA Reputation
The NBA reputation is really sitting on the edge of a cliff right now. The inconsistent calls from one game to the next are finally taking their toll with long-time NBA fans. Some of the games are going all WWF style according to these quotes here and here. We agree in the sense that our heads spin too at some of these 'games'. But regarding the 2 links, we actually disagree in both respects. First, the Tuesday night Suns-Lakers seemed to actually be a giveaway to the Suns (and Raja Bell should definitely be suspended); and the Chicago-Heat series isn't one. The Heat should roll the Bulls in Chicago in Game 6. It's no contest. The Bulls are a nice fun team. They made the playoffs. But Jerry Reinsdorf got a gift with an extra home game-- and that should be that. The Heat, without question, have better talent and experience. And they are the better team.
May 2
Los Angeles Clippers
The Clips embarrassed the Nuggets. The Clippers looked rock solid in the frontcourt, backcourt, and bench. They completely outplayed Denver. And for that, they get into the 2nd round of the playoffs for the first time since 1976. During that time, the Lakers have won 55 playoff series and eight NBA World Championships. The Clippers haven't even been in the playoffs 8 times... in their entire history (story).
Denver Nuggets
We have mentioned this before. When you have a hole in your roster and you want to win in the playoffs you need to fill that void. You can't dance around it and pretend it doesn't matter. Mark Cuban and Dallas learned that lesson over and over again by pretending they could get by with Shawn Bradley and Nowitzki playing Center. Dampier and Diop are not great centers, but they are a big presence down low and a combined 12 fouls-- and they allow Dirk to float outside where he needs to be. Denver's hole: outside shooting. They refuse to find a 3-point shooter. And when they made their big moves late in the season, they grabbed Ruben Patterson. You live and you learn. Denver has a lot to learn about building a team to win in the playoffs. As Carmelo Anthony put it: "I don't want to be like Kevin Garnett".

Baby number 2 for Kobe and Vanessa(story) and child number 6 for Shaq and Shaunie(story)-- on the same day (story)!
April 27
NBA Playoffs
Just throwing this one out there (this is why this page is called 'NBA Speculation'). On the one hand we think the concept of the refs fixing/steering outcomes is crazy. However, too many NBA fans always talk about it, and sometimes it does make you think. So, suppose the refs do their part to get these early round series to go an extra game or two. Could it conceivably get to the point where players start to get a feel for when its not going to be their night with the ref. The players could 1) play easy and save energy for the next game or 2) the players, upset with inconsistent calls, just say fine, you get a longer series-- but this game is going to be so boring no one's gonna want to watch.Could it conceivably get to that point.
April 26
2006 NBA MVP
ESPN is reporting Nash will win it again (story). Insiders believe the reason is that Nash is either #1 or #2 on most ballots while Kobe and/or LeBron may get as many #1's as Nash, they are more scattered on most ballots. As for the best player on the Suns (that guy named Shawn Marion) (Phoenix team stats here), he won't be in the mix. Just as Amare was left out of the MVP vote last year: he was 10th in the voting (here) despite better stats here. Fantasy value? Amare easily beat Nash in 2004-2005 (2005 NBA Fantasy Rankings) and same with Marion this year (NBA Fantasy Values). The fantasy values reflect the players overall contribution to the team in terms of assists, points, rebounds, blocks, steals, and turnovers. Our point is that Nash is certainly a great player and almost worthy of an MVP, but nope.

NBA MVP via CNNSI
CNNSI takes a look at 82games.com net plus-minus statistics to pick an MVP (story): James over Wade. Kelly Dwyer, writing for SI here, votes for LeBron. Then he throws a curve ball with Phil Jackson as coach of the year and then he spoofs Isiah Thomas by giving him the Executive of the Year award for his benevolence and good service to the rest of the league's GM's.
NBA MVP by Marc Stein
Stein recycles Steve Nash. We pretty much agree with the logic (story)-- if you believed only Nash was the key last year why wouldn't you give it to him this year too. Shawn Marion? Who's he? This will be the 2nd year in a row (Amare and now Shawn) that the best player (statistically) on one of the best team's in the NBA gets completely passed over in the MVP balloting. Perhaps a good question for Stein is if its all Nash when his sidekick is Amare or Marion-- then why is Dirk his next best pick without Nash around?
NBA MVP by Steve Kerr
Steve Kerr believes in LeBron James (all Steve Kerr's NBA awards here). As Kerr points out, LeBron is "the most well-rounded" and his passing skill "truly makes his teammates better". James joins Michael Jordan, Jerry West, and Oscar Robertson and becomes only the 4th player in NBA history to average over 30 points, 7 rebounds, and 6 assists per game. And, Larry Bird came close in 86-87 (career stats here).
Maurice Cheeks
Look no further than Cheeks for Philadelphia's big disappointment. The Sixers had all of the pieces and Cheeks should have, no question, found a way to motivate this team into the playoffs. Zach Randolph misses Cheeks because he was easy on him: "Cheeks didn't demand nothing" (quote). But Sixers President Billy King blames himself, not Cheeks. But then he says: "We need to get back to where we play defense (the way we did in 2001)" (story) which, from an outside perspective seems like something you could blame on coaching. But the article and King's quotes are pretty clear that he's sticking with Cheeks.
April 18
Clippers vs Grizzlies
Would you want to win this game? If Memphis wins they get a first round date in Dallas (3rd best team in the NBA) with the following round against the 2nd best team in the NBA. Or, if your the Clippers-- you lose and you get to play Denver and then either Phoenix or the Lakers. The NBA will need to do something in the offseason to correct this mess. There should never be any, not even a slight, disincentive to win a game. You couldn't have a bigger (business and professional) incentive to lose this game. Big mistake by the NBA and it should put David Stern under the spotlight-- its just a plain stupid oversight.
April 17
2005-2006 NBA Awards
We basically agree with all of Marty Burn's picks here: Obviously, Chris Paul is rookie of the year (why Utah passed on him, we still don't know, see link for Chris Paul), D'Antoni should be coach of the year (unless Mavs tie Spurs), Mike Miller is the NBA's best 6th man, and Boris Diaw is Most Improved. Our only slight disagreement is that Ben Wallace should be defensive player of the year, although Burns makes a good case for Bruce Bowen. Re: the MVP, LeBron's got a good case (more in next couple days).
Larry Brown
Brown's "health" will prevent him from coaching the last 2 games of the season (story). A big shocker for everyone. Brown was on the verge of retirement before the season. Now, after coaching the Knicks to the worst record in the Eastern Conference, either a) he's had enough and now it really is time to spend time with the family or b) the Knicks realize it was really a bad idea to bring him in. Or, worse, Brown's buddies in New York brought him in for a year and will fog over the insurers. In any of the cases, what is most amazing is who are the people providing insurance (story) for this charade? It's a win-win for the coach and the team and a total loss for the insurers. The only thing that could have worked for the insurers is if Brown and the Knicks won games (and Brown decided he wanted to keep coaching). Why would an insurance company want to get in the business of predicting whether the Knicks would win or lose games? They might as well be in Vegas. So are there really insurers for this deal? Or is this just the news to tide over the Knicks fans.
April 10
NBA Coach of the Year
It's really down to 2. We can all give props to Flip Saunders (profile). The Pistons are going to win over 10 games more than they did last year. And that could be enough for a lot of writers. But, the real 2 are Mike D'Antoni (Suns) and Avery Johnson (Mavericks). Each team's finish will seal their coaches fate. If the Mavs win the Western Conference its all Avery. Otherwise, its a dogfight with D'Antoni. Analysts have not quite yet come down from the Steve Nash love affair, but the fact is starting to emerge that it is the system in Phoenix that is not only responsible for the Suns' amazing consistency no matter whether its Marion or Amare in the paint... it's also responsible for revitalizing the NBA game (team scoring stats here).
Miami Heat
The Heat have dropped 4 of their last 6. It's hard to believe that Shaq and Wade still won't pull this ship together when the playoffs start. However, the absence of Jason Williams (news) is starting to hit home. Is Gary Payton capable of stepping up? At times he has been solid, but lately he has been disasterous (stats). Udonis Haslem says the whole team is "playing nicked up" (story).
April 9
NBA Tiebreakers
The Sixers division record beats the Bulls (schedule) record in division play so Philadelphia (schedule) owns the first tiebreaker. The Spurs have a 1/2 game on Dallas (schedule). If they tie, the Spurs (schedule) need to win their last 2 division games (Memphis today, and Houston). If they do they own the 2nd tiebreaker (conference play). Story.
April 7
Miami Heat
It's hard to find a bright spot in Miami's home loss to the Pistons. Playoffs are just a few games away and Miami is now discovering that the Gary Payton that showed up for the Lakers in the 2004 NBA Finals (flashback) has reappeared (box score).
April 6
Last Playoff Spot in the East
If the Sixers end up losing the 8th playoff spot in the Eastern Conference (standings) there is no one to blame but themselves. Losing at home to the competition (box score)-- the Chicago Bulls will be Exhibit A in the Sixers debacle (4-12 in the last month-- schedule). Chance at redemption Saturday night in Chicago.
April 2
Phoenix Suns
Everyone is having career highs in scoring this season for the Phoenix Suns. The reason everyone on Phoenix is having a career season in scoring is simply because the Suns score more points than any other NBA team-- by a long shot (stats). And that's because Mike D'Antoni isn't afraid to have a high-profile run-and-gun offense. Conventional wisdom (which we basically agree with) is that once the playoffs come, the half court offense dominates. Under this logic, Phoenix is toast in the playoffs without Amare Stoudemire-- and Kurt Thomas at less than full strength. But, just maybe Mike D'Antoni's system can mess everyone up. Other teams (say the Pistons) aren't used to throwing up 120 points in a game. And maybe by putting this type of pressure on opponents could actually work in the Suns' favor come playoff time? But, the point is that if Steve Nash were playing with Larry Brown (or say, Jerry Sloan) it would be a slower offense with lots of pick and rolls. It's the system in Phoenix that leads to the career highs. If your team is averaging 108 points a game and you take points away (Q.Rich, Amare, etc), well then, you get higher scoring averages for everyone else. Steve Nash is one of the best players in the NBA that Phoenix could have running that type of offense. But its the offense. It's the coach. It's the system. It's getting the right players that fit in that system. Steve Nash is simply not the one and only reason.
March 31
NBA MVP
Steven A. Smith (ESPN Quite Frankly - site) throws a curveball with his nod to Shawn Marion. And why not? He's the #1 rated fantasy baller in the NBA (rankings here).
March 23
2006 World Championship
Who will be the NBA Champion? No surprise, the odds currently favor the Pistons and then the Spurs (TradeSports prices here). From there: the Heat, Mavericks, and Suns are all bunched up. And after that, the bettors say no one else has a chance. Kobe's available for pennies. A buck and change buys a dream on LeBron, or Carmelo, the Pacers, or Cassell and the Clips. But, Vegas sees things a little differently (here). Not so fast on Detroit, they like the Spurs, and the Heat, better.
NBA Standings: Eastern Conference
Standings here. Pretty straight forward in the East. The top 3 are locked up, in order: Detroit, Miami, New Jersey. LeBron likely has first-round home court with the 4th spot. Who will the top 4 play? The Wizards, Indiana, Bucks, and Philly battle it out. Anything can happen there. Bulls and Celtics have an outside chance at #8 but would need a big run combined with A.I. and the Sixers falling apart.
NBA Standings: Western Conference
Time for a review, with just 15 games before the 2nd season starts (standings). The battle really is just for spots #7 and #8. At this point, Kobe has basically made it to where he wants to be. If he looks at it as every game from here on out is a playoff game, the Lakers just need to hold ground and their in. Two more games against NO/OKC boost Kobe's chances of grabbing a playoff spot (schedule). Then again, the Hornets are, themselves, fighting for a playoff spot and they need the wins just as bad. Sacramento and Ron Artest have moved up into the 8th spot. The last week of the season for Utah includes a game at Dallas and another at San Antonio. Doesn't look good for them. Houston, Minnesota, and Golden State need a big run to unseat any of the above.
March 22
Amare Stoudemire
One minute it seems like there is no visibility for his return. And the next minute, he's back on the court (story). Without Kurt Thomas too, the Suns really do need Amare back on the court. And, for the Pacers, Jermaine O'Neal is back (story).
March 18
New York Knicks
The green uniforms were a hit in more ways then one (picture, story).
March 16
Minnesota T-Wolves
Lessons in how to destroy a team. Kevin McHale has pretty much got it down to a science. Last year all he had to do was take over coaching. That slowed the front office bleeding for a while. But, now he's back working full-time on messing up the team roster. This year's brilliant move? The trade itself wasn't all that bad... until you see what they did with it. As a Western Conference contender you can't take 3 guys from a mediocre team in the Eastern Conference; insert them into your starting line-up; and then expect to win. And sure enough, the T-Wolves have fallen apart. Six losses in a row following 2 early wins in March. Building on a 3-10 month of February (schedule and results here).
March 5
State of the NBA
We like to give Mike D'Antoni props. And we will do it again. Is he leading a revival of the NBA game? The fact is this right now: fans and non-fans recognize the NBA only as: 'every game just goes down to the final minute'. That part can never really change. But watching the game for what happens during the game can. Fast breaks and points on the board. Two more props for speed: Eddie Jordan (bio) has the Wizards running. And, the Atlanta Hawks "RealGM", Billy Knight (bio), is breaking the mold by assembling a cast of 6'8" athletes. Kind of unrelated, but here's another take on the state of the NBA here.
Team USA
The Dream Team feel is just not there. But the roster is set (story) and at least Mike D'Antoni will be on the bench. As for Luke Ridnour? What's that all about? Official site and roster here.
Michael Jordan
Still having an impact on the court. The AJXXI, "let your game speak", here.
March 2
The Hornets
It's true that Chris Paul is flat out awesome and the "Hornets are playoff contenders" (story). And we will add that Byron Scott is not getting the attention he deserves for his job in the wins. But, the 2nd half of the season is going to be tough and the closer truth is that reality may be about to settle in for the New Orleans/Oklahoma City Hornets. A big 12 out of 14 losing streak is a distinct possibility. The playoffs are on teams minds now, and beating the Hornets will be a must win game for everyone from here on out. Scott will have his hands full with games coming up against Phoenix, Denver, Indiana, at San Antonio, at Chicago, at the Lakers, etc. schedule. But, coming up will be some big attention in New Orleans (story) and maybe that hype can keep this group inspired. March 8, 18, and 21 are home games at the New Orleans Arena ("Home of the Hornets").
March 1
Allen Iverson
Iverson has apparently been passed over for the 2008 USA Olympics Team. Perhaps his age (he would be 33 then) is a concern. But, the two best seasons of his career are last year and this year (stats). Probably, the x factor is his reputation. But Larry Brown had a lot to do with defining Allen Iverson's reputation. And the media sided with Brown more often than not. We are now learning more and more about Larry Brown every day. 'Nuff said there. Iverson is solid, proven, and one of the biggest competitors there are (and have been) in the NBA. If he wants to play, he deserves a slot. Selections will be announced Sunday (story).
February 27
Tale of Two Coaches
D'Antoni understands one thing: you score more points then your opponent, then you win the game. No center. Phoenix doesn't get hooked up about it. They just play their game (box score). Then, you look at Larry Brown. No matter how many gunners he may get thrown in front of him in New York, he continues to keep the straight jacket tightly zipped up on all of 'em. There's no fun with Larry. And no wins to show for it. Case in point here. Just read the quotes. His head is spinning. He just can't figure out how to run.
New York Knicks
At least they stopped collecting overpriced power forwards. Point guards are so much better, right?
February 26
Cleveland Cavs Fans
There really is no excuse for booing LeBron James for one bad half of one game. The Cavs are right where they are expected to be in the playoff hunt-- behind Detroit and Miami. LeBron James has been the best player in the NBA this season (game log here) (note: Cleveland fans are right about his foul shooting-- he's only at 72% this season). But the frustration of losing to Jordan for so many years lingers in Cleveland. And the Indians and Browns don't help the frustrated Cleveland fans. But booing LeBron? Any sympathy we had for Cleveland fans not being able to get over the top in the NBA, MLB, and NFL-- well, its a little harder to feel bad anymore. Story. As for booing the Knicks (also in the story)-- it would take a day to list off all the reasons. Their battling Charlotte for last place in the NBA. They should be booed more.
Corey Maggette
Planning to be back on the court for Wednesday night's game (link). The team may have other plans (link). The Clippers are currently in 5th in the Western Conference (NBA standings here).
February 25
Kevin Garnett and the Knicks
ESPN's Marc Stein says, pretty firmly in his opinion, that you can forget the rumors. Minnesota already passed on Steve Francis and grabbed Ricky Davis instead. Stein also covers a subject we frequently discuss. Larry Brown is not, and has not been, the guy for the Knicks.
February 24
Denver and Dallas
The Mavs and Mark Cuban turned the other way for a few years. The problem was clear. They needed a real center. But Cuban made trade after trade-- never solving that problem. Finally, he brought in Dampier. And then he added Diop. Problem solved. The tandem hasn't been productive on offense. But they can bang up opposing big men.. and, they equal 12 fouls. So far, combined, they've managed to pull down some boards and swat shots, game after game. Solid. Problem solved. Now, Denver finds themselves in a similar position. They clearly need an outside shooter-- a 3-point bomber. Instead of trying to patch the problem, Kiki made things even worse by dumping a couple shooters (Watson and Lenard) and picking up a back-up for Carmelo and a back-up for K-Mart and Elson. Thankfully Kiki has a winner in Carmelo who can overcome bad management.
Steve Francis
First, he gets stuck playing 60's ball with Jeff Van Gundy in Houston. Then he gets stuck in a dead offense in Orlando. Francis can run. Francis likes the open court. So, where does he end up? In another straight jacket. With Larry Brown. Larry Brown has Q-Rich, Marbury, Francis, and Crawford. A great cast for running up and down the court. But Brown has blinders on. It's Larry's way no matter what the roster is.
February 22
Math in New York
Math in New York is a little bit different then everywhere else. There's more money floating around there which means more for the Knicks.. the Yankees.. to spend. We're not getting into the whole fairness argument here. We just want to point out what $30 million or so can buy in the NBA. For $33.5 million you can have the Bobcats roster. For $34.7 you can have the Pistons starting five. And for just a little less, you can have Marbury and Francis; whose 2005-2006 salaries add up to $30.2 mil.
Rivalry Week?
'Create-a-rivalry' week kicks off on Thursday. Wizards-Grizzlies, look out.
New York Knicks
Isiah is still talking with every team in the league. Marty Burns breaks down the deal here. But, will Marbury and Francis ever play a game together? Can Thomas get Garnett (the rumor? Check out the latest on all NBA trade rumors here and here.
February 20
New York Knicks
How much longer, Larry? (NBA Standings here). Maybe Brown is more of a front office guy. And maybe Thomas would be better off back on the floor? Thomas was considered a flop as a head coach in Indiana but he did take the Pacers to the playoffs in every one of his 3 seasons.
First Half Recap
We basically agree with the calls here (great story). Chris Paul is flat-out awesome baby (as Dick Vitale would say). And, we believe D'Antoni is the best coach in the NBA (First, he brought back speed and scoring to the NBA. Second, we have always felt it was his coaching and style of play that made everyone on Phoenix better. This year has borne that out, as a new cast of role players is in-- but, with the same results). On the MVP, Kobe could be passed up for playing on a .500 team and Billups is clearly the man. But, we ragged on the choice of Nash as MVP last year because 1) Amare's stats were better and 2) because of our opinion of D'Antoni. And we stand by that opinion. Nash didn't deserve it last year. Shaq or Amare did. At the least, it should have been a closer vote. This year, however, is different. This really may be the year Nash actually deserves it.
NBA All-Star Game
Make it two in a row for the East (results of all NBA All-Star games here). Last year, Iverson led the East to victory. And the East's win before that was in 2001-- another Iverson MVP game. This year (box score and recap here) A-I was a little off, but LeBron-e carried the show.
February 15
NBA All-Star Weekend
The long weekend kicks off on Thursday. Complete schedule here. The game (the 55th annual) is Sunday night at 8 eastern on... TNT. Rosters are here. First-timers: Billups, Bosh, Rip, Gasol, and Tony Parker. The veterans: Shaq (13 all-star games), Garnett (9), Kobe (8), T-Dunc (8), A-I (7), and Vinsanity (7). The ballot results and starters: here.
NBA Trades
The NBA trading deadline is approaching: Thursday, February 23rd at 3pm (here). NBA.com has the complete coverage of all trades and rumors at 'Player Movement 2006' here.
February 2
Larry Brown
The frustration is mounting. The Knicks continues to idle away near the end of the conference standings (here). How much longer will it last?
January 31
Celtics-Wolves Trade
Who got the better of it? If one night on the court settles it, then Minnesota is a winner. Olowakandi has been flat for the T-Wolves. Enter Mark Blount, who racked up fantasy points in 28 minutes off the bench (box score here). And Minnesota also got Ricky Davis who has provided some high-profile outside/in slash to the offensive. Good enough deal as it is for the T-Wolves. But then, the x-factor in the deal, Marcus Banks may end up being the balance tipper. Banks may be the guy that differentiates this deal between two former teammates, Ainge (Boston's ED profile) and McHale (T-Wolves VP profile). Rumor is McHale is dressing up Banks to dish him to another team. That could only boost the value of this deal for Minnesota. He's already getting good press in the Seattle papers (story). For Boston, one bright spot is Al Jefferson now has some room to grow. More on the deal here.
January 27
Isiah Thomas
The Thomas scandal is big news in New York and his job status is a "genuine issue" (story). Larry Brown wants him to stay.
January 26
Kevin Garnett
Garnett turns 30 in May, but is he already showing signs of wearing down? Just a couple weeks ago he delivered 12 straight double-doubles. However, he has turned a bit timid at several times during this season, including Sunday's nationally-televised home loss to the 76ers in which Garnett managed just 13 points on a team desperate for his leadership.

Two long awaited deals are finally done: Artest is out of Indy and 'Candi is out of Minnesota. The next big trade on the horizon may be a tough one for the Magic to pull off, but as Steve Kerr says (here), Orlando is desperate to unload Steve Francis. Who could want him? Not too many teams. One possible fit-- Atlanta. Joe Johnson's big contract for Stevie Franchise. The Hawks need a real point guard.
Jamaal Tinsley
He makes Marcus Camby look like an iron man. He's got a string of 4 healthy games in a row going (game log here). And now, with Jermaine O'Neal out 8 weeks, the Pacers could actually use his spark.

Kobe Bryant
NBA.com has just published the complete analysis (here) of Kobe's 81-point, 2nd best ever, performance from Sunday night.

Shaquille O'Neal
Not going to hazard a guess, but time to get the question out there. Is Shaq's fantasy NBA career permanently behind him? Game log here and career stats here. Diesel is in his 14th season in the NBA and turns 34 in less than 2 months. For comparison, Patrick Ewing played 17 seasons and retired at age 39 (career stats here). And Karl Malone played 19 seasons and retired at age 40 (career stats here). Malone was Malone up until his final season. Ewing tailed off his final 3 seasons.

Larry Brown
Guess who is coaching the worst team in the NBA? Tied with the Atlanta Hawks are the New York Knicks and their head coach Larry Brown (profile). Both teams are 7-21. See NBA Standings here. The Knicks were 2-12 in December to get them to this point. (Knicks December results here). One key problem for the Knicks has been that Brown has yet to settle on a routine for the team. Although, now the NY Daily News says Brown will go younger (with Antonio Davis!). Another problem has been that the Knicks (with Marbury, Crawford, and Richardson.. as well as young big guys like Frye) should be out running up and down the floor throwing up tons of 3-pointers and alley-oops. Instead, Larry Brown has believed that his formula for success in Detroit (defense, defense, defense) should just be replicated everywhere-- regardless of what the player's strengths are. Phil Jackson ran into this problem with the Lakers when he insisted on the triangle offense despite having 4 super stars (Shaq, Kobe, Payton, and Malone) on the team. Anyways, we must speculate... will Larry Brown retire to 'spend time with the family'?
