Masters Tournament History

The first Masters Tournament was in 1934 (although it was known as the "Augusta National Invitation Tournment" for the first 5 years). The Master Tournament is conducted at Augusta National Golf Club in Augusta, Georgia (the Augusta Club itself was built for the legendary golfer, Bobby Jones, and opened in 1932, in part designed for such a national tournament). The 18-hole course is explained in detail here.

The winner of the Masters Tournament is, by tradition, presented with a green jacket. The "Green Jacket" has been awarded since 1949. It is, perhaps, the most coveted award in all of golf. The winner of the previous year's tournament presents the Green Jacket to the new winner. When a golfer wins back-to-back years (such as Jack Nicklaus repeating in 1966, Nick Faldo in 1990, and Tiger Woods in 2002) the Chairman of the Augusta National Golf Club presents the jacket.
